Treachery or Gross Negligence ?
Nauru Authorities And German Raider FAILURE TO NOTIFY VESSELS United Press Association —By Flectrlo Telegraph—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 10.40 p.m. CANBERRA, April 2. The failure of tho Nauru authorities to notify vessels of the approach of the German raider could be attributed either to treachery or gross negligence, •~d the Minister of the Navy (Hon. M. Hughes) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr. Hughes was commenting on the report of the New A aland Government Commission. it was obvious that the presence of a raider, or that it was within range of Nauru, was known, which fact, Mr. Hughes emphasised, ought to have been wirelessed to every ship within a 1000miles radius of the island. Mr. Fadden (Acting Prime Minister) supplemented Mr. Hughes’ comment, and added that the Commonwealth Government was looking forward to receiving a copy of tho New Zealand Commission's report. It was also intended to ask the Nauru administration for a report on the German raid on- Nauru, and appropriate action would be taken if the circumstances warranted it.
