Colyton

(From Our Own Correspondent.} Last week a large gathering of people from tho colyton aud surrounding districts filled the hall for the occasion of a complimentary Bocial evening accorded Mr. E. Lankshear who was on leave. Dancing was enjoyed till a late hour, intersperced with novelty numbers, while items were contributed by Miss Joyce Lanksheare and Mr. Noel Shortall. Shortly before the supper adjournment Mr. W. J. Smith called upon the guest of honour to accept a fountain pen as a gift from the .residents. Mr. Smith also conveying to the recipient the customary good wishes and expressed the wish of the gathering for his speedy and safe return. Representing tho Womens’ Patriotic Society, Mrs. A. Waldin made the presentation of an appropriate travelling gift. “ Grassmere,” the popular picnic rendezvous was once more kindly lent by Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Hocken for the purpose of a garden party organised by tho Colyton Women’s Patriotic Society held last Saturday week. Favoured by sunshine tho day proved enjoyable for tho patrons who found entertaining diversion among the numerous stalls, games and novelty competitions, while the lovely gardens were duly admired by the visitors, the grounds being bedecked w’itli flags. Trophies for the competitions were donated by Mrs. A. O. Simpson, Mrs. Hoclceu, Mr. and Mrs. Thurston, Mrs. Waldin, Mrs. Buchanan Miss Pearce, Mrs. Krull, Mrs. N. Shortall, and Mrs. Bray. The results were as follows:—Clock golf, Mrs. M. A. MacLeod; croquet, Miss J. M. Cafpbell; nail-driving, Miss N. Williamson and Mr. N. Hocken; ball-game, Mr. N. Hocken; sponge sandwich (judged by Miss Whitehead), Airs. Thurston 1, Mrs. Anderson 2. Two raffles were won by Mrs. Langdon and Mrs. Bray respectively. Two stalls which were well patronized were in the charge of Airs. Jensen and Airs. Alitchell (produce) and Airs. Shepherd and Afiss M. Smith (sweets). An outdoor afternoon tea was served by a band of lady helpers. Mrs. A. Waldin, president of tho Society desires to extend her thanks and appreciation to all who contributed towards the success of the day, either by donation or personal effort, and to Air. and Airs. Hocken for placing their Lome at the disposal of the society*
