This All-in War Effort

CR. W. B. TENNENT SPEAKS OUT How some people were making a one hundred per cent, war effort and other* were not, Was referred to by Cr. W. li. Tennent when speaking at the city's au revoir to troops last evening in the Palmerston North Opera House. "We have heard a lot about the all-in war effort," he observed. "Many people are putting all they know into the war such as those who have given their loved ones and in addition are helping in many other directions. But we can’t sav that when we find that in. essential industries men who have volunteered to work extra hours ar© prohibited from doing so by law; we can’t sav that w r hen we find miner*

going on strike because there happen* to be a squabble between the doctor* Rnd the Government, and when we find ropeworkers asked to produce extra rope for the troops in Egypt, not answering the call. Under those circumstances the 100 per cent, war effort becomes a farce and until such thing# cease, we as a nation cannot get wholeheartedly into the war effort. We are like those fools who try to furnish their cabins while the ship is sinking. in saying au revoir to these boys we should also sav that such things must

cease. If we are not prepared to sacrifice a little personal comfort then our nation will go under. Let us make a pledge to these men that we will also make our sacrifices so that we might win this war," Cr. Tennent concluded. There were over forty soldiers present, Cr. Tennent tendering an apology for the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, who is attending the Municipal Conference in Auckland. Each soldier received a present of a safety razor and money belt. Other speakers who paid tribute to the "boys** were Air. G. Rennie for tho R.S.A., Alajor J. C. L. Alerton for the Home Guard, and Rev. J. Hubbard for the churches.
