Brilliant Scene at Reception
THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL Per WELLINGTON. Feb. 24. Rarely has Wellington accorded visitors as demonstrative and hearty a •welcome as her leading citizens gave to ithe Governor-General. Sir Cyril (Newall, and Lcdy Newall to-night. The Town Hall was crowded for the jcivic reception, when the mayor, Mr fT. C. A. Hislop, presented their Excel(lencies with a formal illuminated (address of greeting and expressed the ipleasure .felt in the city that so distinguished a man had been sent to New [Zealand as his Majesty’s representative, i The Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, [also joined in the welcome. The scene was a brilliant one. The (leaders of Church and State and of the lArmed Services, as well as men and (women prominent in every walk of {public life, were present. Full evening (dress with decorations was worn, and the scene was lively with brilliant igowns, uniforms, glittering orders, medals and jewellery. The large crowd included many distinguished people. The mayor and mayoress accompanied their Excellencies into the hall. The mayor wore an ermine gown and golden chain of office over his evening clothes. The Governor - General was in ordinary evening clothes with decorations, in contrast to his previous appearance m Air Force uniform. Lady Newall carried a bouquet of pink carnations. Throughout the speeches the reception was remarkable for the constant enthusiasm and applause of the public in the body of the hall.
