Rescue Work After the “ Blitz"

CASUALTIES IN NORTH-EAST COAST TOWN LONDON, Fe«b. 24. Rescuers in a north-east coast town which was bombed by the Nazis, worked throughout the night to find an 18-ruonths-old baby whose mother and two other women were killed. A faint cry was heard at daybreak, ten hours after the bombing. The baby was found in its cot among the wreckage. The baby was slightly injured and was admitted f.o hospital. Another mother with a year-old baby was killed wheu a terrace of houses were hit. The bodies of a man and a woman were recovered this morning. A woman was dug out after being buried in rubble to the neck. A boy of 14 years was so pinned down that it took four hours to rescue him. A man, his I wife and baby were brought out and taken to hospital. The homeless showed the greatest fortitude. They were taken to rest homes, where they were visited by the Lord Mayor and Mayoress. Seventy persons were in a Home Counties inn mentioned in Dickens’ novels which was damaged last night. There were no casualties. An incendiary bomb set fire to a buildiug in the London area, resulting ia the destruction of 20,000 orchestral score sheets. To-day*s German communique says: “Our bombers last night attacked Hull and bombed aircraft works in the south of England and docks and armament works in London. Isolated enemy attacks in occupied territory resulted in a number of people being killed and wounded. Insignificant damage was caused. ’ ’
