Dirctor Uses Tricks to Obtain Effects

“THE MARK OF ZORRO” (State: Coming on Friday.) In order to achieve their desired effects for film scenes directors often have to resort to psychological devices. With Director Rouben Mamoulian its usually a * ‘ gag ’ ’ that does the trick. Recently on the set of ‘ ‘ The Mark of Zorro,” 20th Centry-Fox film coming to the State Theatre on Friday Mamoulian was directing 500 extras in a scene with star Tyrone Power and his leading lady, Linda Darnell. He wanted the extras to cry out as Spanish soldiers of 1820 slashed through the crowds with swords. [ They tried it once but Momoulian, who is a stickler ior realism, wasn’t I satisfied. “Think of all those bills [you have to pay,” he suggested. | The results were gratifying for such howls as Hollywood seldom has heard went up in the next “take.” An hour later Mamoulian was making a shot with the same crowd, but this time he wanted them to be wildly happy. After two failures to get what he wanted, Mamoulian grabbed a megaphone and announced, “If we get this scene on the next take, I’m going to give all of you a bonus.” The extras cheered, the cameras rolled and joy really registered. Heading the brilliant supporting cast of “The Mark of Zorro” are Linda Darnell and Basil Rathbone, while Gal© Sondergaard, Eugene I’allette, J. Edward Bromberg, Montagu Love, Janet Beecher, Robert Lowery and Chris-Pin Martin are also featured.
