Commandeer of School For Military Purposes
PROTEST BY EDUCATION BOARD Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. “It is an absolute scandal and we should pester the department until we get satisfaction,” declared Mr. 8. B. Bims at the Auckland Education Boar! meeting when a letter was submitted from the Hamilton Primary Schools' Headmasters’ Association protesting against the commandeering of the Hamilton West School for military purposes. It was stated that provision could be made for soldiers without taking over schools. Mr. Sims said the now school was standing empty, having been reserve! as a hospital for soldiers. “There are 100 beds in the school awaiting, probably, patients. It is wrong that should be permitted when there is ample ground at the Waikato Hospital to build an auxiliary hospital, as is being done in other centres. ' The chairman, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said the best way would be to send a telegram to the department. “Wo always get a reply to a wire,” ha added. Air. Sims said the school had been standing empty since before Christmas, while pupils were crowded into the old school. Unless something was done, the position would continue indefinitely.
