Shortage of Slaughtermen in Southland
DRY WEATHER CAUSES RUSH OF STOCK Per Prtjss Association. INVERCARGILL, Jan. G. The possibility of a shortage of slaughtermen coinciding with the rush of stock is causing some concern in the freezing industry in Southland and extensive inquiries are being made through New Zealand to secure as many slaughtermen as possible. The possibility of a shortage of slaughtermen at the works because of the dry weather is increasing as lambs are coming forward rapidly. Twentytwo men who had been definitely engaged to start at the Makarewa and | Mataura works to-day failed to report. The absence of the 22 men, it was stated, meant that about 2000 lambs a day could not bo handled and Phe accumulation of that number would soon cause serious difficulty. With the busy part of the season now beginning, it is likely that the men will be approached witli a proposition that they should agree ot work a certain amount of overtime almost daily and on Saturday afternoons.
