Fire Calls on Decrease

FIGURES FOR PAST YEAR A substantial decrease iu the number of calls received by the Palmerston North Fire Brigade during 1940, in comparison with the figure for the previous year, is shown in the records kept by the superintendent (Mr. P. A. Milverton). In 1940 there was a total of 121 cals compared with ISO for 1939 and 132 for the previous year. The superintendent attributed the substantial decrease to the alertness of the public in sounding alarms and to the fact that they are taking less risks. There AA-ere still, however, a large number of false alarms given maliciously. The following table shows the number of calls received in each month of 1939 and 1940:

Total ISO 121 The total for 1940 was the lowest for some years past, and was also slightly below the average. The number of calls in December, 1940, was 12 compared with 11 in December, 1539. They included one fire, a chimney fire, four rubbish fires, four grass and two malicious false alarms.
