Cosy Theatre, Woodville

“IT’S A DATE” Heralded as Deanna Durbin's most colourful motion picture, “ It’s a Date,” which has its background in Hawaii, will screen at the Cosy Theatre to-night and to-morrow. Marking another important forward step in the development of the Universal star iuto more mature roles, Deanna’s seventh film finds her surrounded by a stellar cast. Kay Francis and Walter Pidgeon share major honours. Eugene Pallette, Lewis Howard of “First Love,” Samuel S. Hinds, Cissie Loftus, Fritz Feld, S. Z. Sakall, famous European actor, Henry Stephenson, are others. The producer* responsible for Deanna’s record of six consecutive hits, Joe Pasternak, assumes the same post for “It’s a Date.” The story concerns a famous Broadway actress and her daughter, played by Miss Francis and Miss Durbin, who are offered the same role in a Broadway show. In addition, they be come rivals for the romantic interest of a Hawaiian pineapple planter, portrayed by Pidgeon. Deanna’s boy-friend, played by Howard, also figures prominently in the complicated but ingratiating proceedings. Tho singing star has four numbors, including a popular tune,

“Love Is All,” by Pinky Tomlin and Harry Tobias. Others are Schubert’s ‘ 1 Avo Maria, ” “ Musetta’s Street Song” from Puccini’s “La Boheme,-*’ and “Loch Lomond.” Harry Owens and his Royal Ilawaiians are also in the cast to carry on tho Hawaiian atmosphere for tho colourful production. Owens and his intornationally-famous orchestra, with hula dancers and the soloist, Kenny Allen, introduce two new numbers, “It Happened in Kaloha,” by Ralph Freed and Frank Skinner, and “Rhythm of the Islands,” by Eddie Cherkose, Jacques Press and Leon Belasco.
