Improvements to R.A.F. Planes

LONDON, Jan. 1. The Air Ministry, while not prepared to confirm or deny any statement. 3 in the article, permits the publication of a description of new types of British aircraft and aero-engines from an American aviation journal. A new single-seater fighter, a Hawker Tornado, with two 1000-horse-power Rolls Royce-Vulture engines, will have a speed of about 425 miles an hour. A Westland Whirlwind fighter, with twin Rolls Royce-Merlin engines will be capable of a speed of just over 400 miles an hour. The Bomber Command will be reinforced by two types—an AvroManchester, with Vulture engines and a speed of about 325 miles an hour, and a Short Stirling four-engined bomber, bigger and faster than the existing “Flying Fortresses.” The WellingtonHampden and Whitley bombers, which are now the backbone of the Bomber Command have been strengthened and equioped with new engines, resulting in increased speed. The Wellingtons have a speed of from 265 to over 325 mTles an hour and the Whitleys from 245 lo about 300 miles an hour.
