Charges Under Gaming Act

Three men, Benjamin Nausbaum junior, Charles J. Williams and William Irwin Black, all of Palmerston, were arrested yesterday on Wing's Line, at the back of the Marton racecourse, by Detectives Mieklejohn and Long, and appeared the same day at the Marton Police Court before Mr. W. Ingle, J.P., on charges of bookmaking and street betting. All were remanded to appear before a Stipendiary Magistrate at Marton on February 5, bail of £IOO each being allowed. Sales Tax Yield

Sales tax receipts during Novembet were practically on a par with those of October and slightly above the camparable figure for November, 1939. The yield from tho tax during November was £595,578, comprising £297,617 tor ordinary revenue purposes and £297,961 for war purposes, compared with £595,513 (ordinary revenue, £298,098; war purposes, £297,715) iu October. The £297,617 collected iu November fo; ordinary revenue purposes compares with tho receipt of £291,844 in the corresponding month of 1939. The war expenses portion of the tax did not come into operation until the end of June, 1940. From the date of its introduction to the end of November this tax has yielded £1,10.1,304 to the War Expenses Account.
