RESULTS OF ANNUAL CALVES AND LAMBS COMPETITION
Following are the judging results ot the annual calves and lambs competitions conducted recently by schools in this district under the auspices of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Boys 7 and Girls’ Agricultural Club: — Woodville. Calves. —Pedigree dairy type: D. Beagley 1, M. Beagley 2 (two entries). Grade dairy type: S. Reed 1 (only entry). Dairy condition, care and attention: S. Reed, D. Beagley, M. Beagley (three entries). Hopelands. Calves.—Grade dairy type: Molly O’Neil 1, Ngaire East 2, Eileen O’Neil 3'(four entries). Dairy condition, caro and attention: Ngaire East 1, Roslein O’Neil 2, Molly O’Neil 3 (four entries). Judge’s comments: All the calves wero brought out in excellent condition, the committee and teachers taking a great interest. Arrangements were made to take the winning calves for competition with Kumeroa. This class was very hard to judge, Kumeroa winning on the narrowest of margins. Lambs.—Longwool cross: Betty Sinclair 1, Peter Guggenstein 2 (two entries). Maharahara West. Calves.—Grade dairy type: Pam Pirie 1, Elsie Pirie 2 (two entries). Dairy condition, care and attention: Elsie Pirie I, Pam Pirie 2 (two entries). Papatawa. Calves.—Grade dairy type: Mervyn Greaves I, Jean Goldsworthy 2, Walter Greaves 3 (17 entries). Dairy condition, care and attention: Jean Goldsworthy 1, Shirley Sand brook 2, Tony Sandbrook 3 (17 entries). Certificates of merit: Rex Morgan, Bernard Bradley, George Herrick, Herbert Davies. Judge’s comments: A very good entry of calves, the head teacher and his assistant taking a keen interest in the work. Te Rehunga. Calves.—Pedigree dairy type: Stuart Houghton 1. Grant Houghton 2 (only entries). Grade dairy type; Tom Kelly 1, Dulcie Wills 2, Stanley Wills 3 (11 entries). Care and attention: Monty Reeves 1, Dulcie Wills 2, Tom Kelly 2 (13 entrios). Certiiicates of merit: Colin Jacques, Peter Smvthe, Bill Wright, Ray Stephenson, John Alderson, David Alderson, Peter Wright. Judge’s comment: In the pedigree dairy type class the first calf was better in the body and top line than the second calf. Care and attention class was quite good. In the grade type class a little more feeding was required. Lambs.—Down cross: Monty Reeves 1, John Cumming 2, Daivne Stratford 3 (six entries). Certificates of merit: Bruce Davis, Brian Gray, Gwyneth Houghton. Judge’s comment: A very mixed class; one good lamb; very mixed ages. Papatawa. Lambs.—Longwool cross: Olive Robb 1 (only entry). Down cross: Fred Robb 1, Mavis Robb 2, Shirley Dickins 3 (three entries). Judge’s comments: Three very nice lambs. Kumeroa. Calves. —Grade dairy type: Shirley Bryant 1, Cynthia Bryant 2, Brian Bryant 3, Colloou Bryant 4 (seven entries). Dairy condition, and care and attention: Cynthia Bryant 1, Brian Bryant 2, Colleen Bryant 3 (seven entries). Certificates of merit: Francis Mac kit* 1, Ivan Jones 2, Trevor Bryant 3. Judgo’s comments: Keen interest wj*** shown hero by teacher, children committee and parents. The winning calves wero very nice. Lambs.—Longwool cross: L. Robb 3, G. Hutchins 2, V. Robb (four entries). Down cross: D. Hutchins 1, C. Last 2, D, Bryant 3 (four entries). Judges: Woodville, Kumeroa, Papatawa, Maharahara, Hopelands: Mr. H. llousego Philips (calves) and Mr. J. Galloway (lambs).
