Evidence of Loss of Holmwood

TIMBER FOUND DAMAGED BY GUNFIRE FOUND Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, announced to-day that the first tangible evidence of the loss of the Holmwood (formerly Tees), which was on the Lyttelton-Chathani Islands service, lias been received by a radio message from the Chatham Islands. “A constable stationed at Waitangi reports that pieces of timber containing shrapnel have been found near Kaingaroa on two different occasions,” said Mr. Fraser. “In the constable’s opinion there is little doubt that these pieces of timber originally formed parts of tho upper structure near the bridge of the Holmwood.” The Holmwood was officially reported missing on November 30, the vessel then being overdue. It is considered probable that the pasesngers and crew have been taken prisoners.
