TENDER TOR CONSTRUCTION LET Ministerial approval foT the couatrue--tion of the Centennial Hoapin taJ in Palmerston North, at .*#n estimated cost of £43,500, was received by the Palmerston North Hospital Board at its meeting yesterday. The Public Works Department adyised that the plans and specifications of the building had been examined and found satisfactory. A contract for the erection of the building has been signed. The report of the special building committee dealing with the URitter said that the managing-secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) had submitted a statement showing suggested reductions in the builder’® and various sub contractors' contract*. As a result, the schedule submitted to the board at its last meeting, which, totalled 48,797, would be reduced to an amount not exceeding £4.3,500 as against the loan authority of £412,000. The committee decided to authorise the managmg-eecretary to proceed with the arrangement of the main contract and the various sub-con-tract® in accordance with this proposal. The chairman of the board (Mr. J. A. Nash) said that the managing-secretary should be complimented on the work he had done in connection with the contracts for the building. He had been working very hard to try to bring this reduction albout, and had been remarkably successful, the alterations made being quite satisfactory. Mr. Nash added that the board had been going into the details of its building programme. Local bodies had been informed that the cost would be £114,000, but at present it seemed that it would be £120,000, including the isolation hospital. The schedule would be discussed at the February meeting. The work was facing the board and would have to be done. He asked members an the meantime to give careful consideration to the schedule. The board decided to place on record appreciation of the services of Mr„ Phillipps in the matter, the chairman saying that members could have no conception of the work he had put into at. In regard to the morgue and post moTtem. department,. Jlr. Phillipps reported that endeavours were being made to effect substantial reductions in the cost of thi® building, aud the matter would be reported on as soon as were definite information was available.
