KIA TOA CLUB The annual meeting of the Kia Toa Amateur Athletic Club was held last Thursday evening when Mr. T. W. Kilpatrick was in tfie chair. A brief re-, view of the season’s activities was made by’ tho chairman. During the past season the standard of athleiics in tno Manawatu had been well up to the standards set in previous years, and although the Kia Toa Cluo, with the one exception of Miss A. Wilson, was not represented at a national gathering, atnletes competed with a great deal or success at district meetings. At the West Coast (N. 1.) Centre championships held in Wanganui, numerous places were gained, the principal performances being those of Miss Alice Wilson, who was placed first in four of the ladies’ championships, and D. Ryan, who won tho junior sprints in good times. The cluo 'a congratulations arc extended to these two.
One open meeting was held during the season out in spite of the ideal weather conditions and the excellent entries, with the added attraction of W. A. C. Puilar, national champion, tho attendance of the public was very poor and the club suffered a heavy loss. Towards the end of the season a team of athletes from Dannevirke paid a visit and although they were successful in only one or two events, an enjoyable evening was spent, it is hoped to keep these inter-club contests alive during the present season if it is at all possible. Reference was made to members who were at present serving in -the armed forces, and the club wishes them the best of luck and a safe return to athletics.
Tfie election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr. A. E. Mansford; president, Mr. A. M. Ong'loy; vice-presidents, nine were elected; club captain, Mr. il. McDonald; hon. secretary, Mr. A. G. Cozens; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. W. Kilpatrick; starter, Mr. A. Weston; liandicapper, Mr. A. S. Coates; delegate to the Manawatu sub-centre, Mr. A. S. Coates; timekeepers, Messrs N. MeLachlan and T. Terry; management committee, Messfs J. Scott, L. Hawthorne, B. Clapcott, H. Temperton and L. MeLachlan. The principal subject brought under discussion was the manner m which activities for the coming season were to be carried on. It was generally agreed that it would be impossible to continue to hold weekly meetings as in the past, but it was decided that a sub-eominiteee approach tho oilicials of the Palmers-ton North Amateur Athletic and Cy'ding Club and endeavour to reach an agreement for the running of both weekly meetings on the same evening, to enable competitors from each club to compete against each other, and to try and maintain to some degree the former high standard of Manawatu athletics. This arrangement, is agreed upon, will keep the two clubs as separate bodies, but at the same time will be in the best interests of the s£ort generally.
