Red Cat Completed Stable Double
RANGITIKEI TOTE £TP £6501
The win-and-place machine proved. popular with racing enthusiasts at the Rangitikei meeting on Saturday and the investments totalled £20,441 10s, compared with £13,937 (single pool) for seven races last year, the increase being £6504 10s. The course was in grand order ana in the feature race of the day th» brilliant Beau Pero mare, Taurangi, drew attention to her New Zealand Cup ■chances with a decisive win after being last for seven furlongs and having to make up her ground wide out on the turn. She won like a champion and she should be all the better for the race. ,From & good start the order passing the stands was Dark Eagle and Hunting Cat, from Colossal Chief, Meamea, Aurora's Star and Trobor. Dynasty and Taurangi were the last pair and there was little change until they approached the five. Colossal Chief, Hunting Cat and Dark Eagle were in line racing for the straight with Little Robin almost on terms just ahead of, Meamea, and Taurangi was moving forward fast. At the distance Colossal Chief had charge but Meamea had worked through near the rails and Little Robin, Aurora's Star and Taurangi were also challenging. A close finish was indicated but over the last bit Taurangi showed her class and she won well by over a length from Meamea who was a short head in front of Little Robin. Aurora’s Star was a good fourth and next home were Colossal Chief, Dark Eagle and Hunting Oat. Three scratchings left five runners for the open sprint and Red Cat and Tuatara were bracketed. Footloose was favourite but he showed none of his usual brilliance and after being well placed at the home turn the best he could do was finish fourth. Though they were liaviag their first races for some time Red Cat and Tuatara went really well and Red Cat, first away, was the winner a Jong way from home. Tuatara began slowly but he made up his ground quickly and he finished second a length and a-half away from Red Cat and the best part of a length in front' of Race Call.
Silverhope was backed down to a very short price on the win machine for the Trial Stakes, and his "place” supporters lost money when he won. From an outside position Silverhope got away smartly and at the end of half a furlong had taken the lead off Princess Merling, with Sandy Bay and Glen Birman at the head of the others. The favourite was first to turn for home and ran in an easy winner from Sandy Bay, who finished well to beat Princess Merling by two lengths for second place. Star Zone was fourth and after a gap came Tauuru, Wildfire and Glen Birman.
Gold Bridge was at a shade of odds on for the Rangitikei Plate, and he won well from the dead-heating "place” favourie, Rhodes, who had to share second honours with Red Chief. Gaylord and Gold Bridge were the early leaders from Red Chief, but the last-named was taken up to join Hokumai at the halfmile, with Gold Bride on the rails behind them and Gaylord and Seyfried next. Gold Bridge followed Red Chief and Hokumai into the straight and then came away to win by a length from Red Chief and the fast-finishing .Rhodes, who dead-heated. Hokumai and Stella Lux-were next. Segra Won Well. Lucullus Boy, favourite for the Sandon Hack Hurdles, might have won but tor a faulty jump at the last fence, the winner turning up in Segra, who paid jusit over double figures. Gold Chase led to the second fence but ran right across it and jumped the rail into the I lawn enclosure. Lucullus Boy and Eupatrid then went on in the lead from Kin--1 cora, War Lap and Segra. The lastnamed still had a good deal of leeway to make up half a mile from home, but ue followed Lucullus Boy, Kihcora and War Lap into the straight. Coming with a run on the inside alter Lucullus Boy had made his mistake at the last fence, Segra won by a length and aquarter from Kincora. Lucullus Boy I was two lengths away, with War Lap I fourth. I A big upset was provided by Silver J Shekel in the Ohakca Hack Handicap, : m which the Inflation gelding scored a , runaway win to return a dividend just under a third of a century. Silver i .Shekel moved up from the rear at the ■ naif-mile and had command on the home ' turn from. Veldette, Waimutu and NewI bury Queen. In the run home nothing I had a chance with Silver Shekel, who j won by six lengths, Veldette beating I Newbury Queen, by half a length, with i Triple Crown only a head away, ahead of Valiant Lady. Another double-figure dividend was | forthcoming in the Parewanui Hack Handicap, in which Curtail lasted long enough to. beat the favourite pair, Sir Rabbi and Sanction. Curtail was sooi in front and led All Quiet, Sir Rabbi,
Laughing Song, Inform and Sanction down tho back. Curtail was four lengths clear crossing the top, where Inform had moved up outside All Quiet, and Sir Rabbi and Sanction were just behind them. Curtail held on to win by half a neck from Sir Rabbi, with Sanction a length and a-half away. Laughing Song was fourth and then came AIJ Quiet and Courting. Zest was favourite for the concluding event but she was beaten a head by Sweet Anne with Verulam a length away third. Veldette was last away, Sweet Anne setting a merry pace ahoad of Zest, Verulam, Pas de Cheval, Royal Consort and Flying Spy. Zest was with Sweet Anne as they, turned for home and although she made a gallant bid for victory she could not get her head in front. Kadina made up a lot of ground over the last bit and she just missed paying a dividend** Detailed results are as under:— TRIAL STAKES, £9O; weight 8.5; 5 furlongs. 1-1 SILVERHOPE (Mr. J, D.
