Hospital Head Resigns
DR. A. R. THORNE, OF WELLINGTON WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. The resignation of the superintendent, Dr. A. R. Thorne, was accepted with regret by the Wellington Hospital Board last night. The chairman, Mr F. Castle, said that Dr. Thorne had been appointed six years ago. with a three years' guarantee of service, and the appointment was renewed. Dr. Thorne, he said, wrote last week that his contract terminated on November 12, and his present state of health was such that he could not continue much longer in the position. Mr Castle mentioned that some months ago Dr. Thorne had a month’s holiday in the north. He came back much better in health, but recently he had said his health had not improved as much as he hoped, and he would have to throw up the position. He moved that the resignation be received with regret, and that the board make suitable arrangements to release him at an early date; the middle of December would suit all parties. Mr Castle said that Dr. Thorne had carried out his duties with great zeal. He had to carry on under difficult conditions, particularly since the Trentham camp was established, and in the later stages he was doing clinical work, which was not part of his duties but, owing to the number of soldiers, he had undertaken it
