MR. J, C. YOUNG THE SPEAKER Pale pink was the colour chosen for the decoration in the large club room at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s yesterday when the October meeting of fho Manawatu Women f s Club was held. Tall vases of tulips graced the tables, with mafehing table napkins to give a charming effect, Mrs. A. E. Hansford presided, associated with her being Mrs. N. V. Ballinger, secretary, and Air. J. C. Young, the guest speaker. Hostesses were Mesdames Spraf;gon, and C. Bierre. Mrs. Hansford reminded the members of the flower day effort for the “ Heart-to-Heart ’ ’ Appeal, asking for the fullest support in contributions and help in order that the “garden city” might maintain its reputation. The supper room at the Opera House would be the depot on Wednesday night for flowers and making buttonholes. A special welcome was extended to Mrs. H. Sinclair, of Plimmerton, also to Mrs. Harley Palmer, a former resident of the city, who recently arrived from England. Pleasure was provided by Mr®. T. Simpson with vocal solos, her accompanist being Mr 3. R. Donald, and Dorothy AlcKegg entertained with clever elocutionary items. Mr. Young, who was introduced by Mrs. Spraggon, held the attention of members in a forceful address on Britain’s Prime Alinister, Mr. Winston Churchill. Mr. Young said it was his purpose to browse through the records of Winston Churchill to get some sidelights on one of whom ail wished to know more—the man who bad brought confidence back to his country and unity, in fact, a fresh new courage. Mr. Young spoke on the lines of an address given recently to the Palmerston North Rotary Club. In conclusion, Air. Young left a challenging thought that we in New Zealand neefled more imagination to lift us up to greater endeavour. We must have one thought, one.song, one goal, compressed in one word—Victory. Thanks were conveyed to the speaker by Mrs. Symonds, who also thanked the artLgts. Mrs. Ballinger reminded members that the annual meeting would be held next month when contributions of books for Porirua would be welcome.
