Caring for the Minesweepers
EIGHT CASES SENT FORWARD FOR CHRISTMAS Mrs. D. Evans presided over tho monthly meeting of the Minesweepers’ Comforts Circle held in the Y.W.C.A. club rooms on Friday. Mrs. C. Freyberg (honorary secretary) presented a statement of the j month’s work, showing a wonderful response to tho Christmas appeal. It was reported that 90 cakes and 87 tins of biscuits and shortbread had been sent in, also 200 tins of sundries, coffee and milk and fruits. Three hundred knitted articles had been received, comprising 46 jerseys, 58 pairs of sea boots, scarves, 13 balaclavas, 41 pairs mittens, 48 pairs socks, six hussifs, 13 shirts and five pairs of cuffs, also J 90 tins of sweets, 50 packets of chocolate and three packets of chewing gum. Fight cases containing these goods ka<l gone forward and there was one case still in hand. Mrs. K. Clayton, College Street, was welcomed to the executive. l't was resolved that members would pay one shilling each per month membership fee. Gifts of cake, biscuits, tinned goods aDd sweets, etc.: Red Cross, Sunshine Club, Mesdames .Guenn (Murauui Ladies’ Guild), Bond and Cook (Awahuri), Heston, Kensington, Whyte, West, Jolly, Lees, Whitehead, Joblin, Monrad, Brown, McKenzie, Bennett, East, Fenton, Bowen (Lougburn), Eliott, Forest, Henderson, Mrs. Hudsons Circle, Lumsden, Major, Sinclair and other members. Flannel shirts were made by Muranui Ladies’ Guild and National Club Sewing Circle. | A scarf was made by Mrs. Venn, of Shannon, who is 90 years of age. Mrs. Winks sent writing pads.
