Concluding a successful year’s activity, the official closing of the Manga ore Golf Club is being held this Saturday afternoon, when the presentation of trophies Avon during the season will bo made. Last week-end a Stableford was played, tho winners of which were Airs. R. Graham and Air. H. Murray. Buckley Golf The nuiteli was to have been played against Herrington at Foxton this Sunday, lias been cancelled temporarily on account of the death of the owner of the property (Airs. Robinson) and will be arranged at a later date. Instead an ail-day open day will be observed at Buckley, the proceeds of which are being donated to tho Lord Mayor of London ’3 distress fund. A stroke is being played in the morning, and in the afternoon a four-ball, best ball, a 36-hole gross, and a 36-hole net. Tennis Club Air. F. Thurston presided ot the annual meeting of the Shannon Tennis Club on Tuesday-night. New members proposed were Air. and Airs. H. Norris, Aliss J. Edmonds, and Alessrs. I. Edmonds, P. Southy, R. SincJair, D. Pigott and E. Homer. Tho resignation

of Mr. D. C. Hill was received with re-, gret. Mr. Thurston, in presenting his report said that the past season had promised to be a successful one but owing to unfavourable weather the interclub and association matches had had to be abandoned. “During the year,” continued the report, “we have lost the valuable services of the club captain, Mr. S. Price, and the honorary secretary, Aliss A. Aloynihan, both of whom have left the district. Our thanks are due to the ladies for the way in which they have attended to the aft'eriioon tea arrangements; to the*hon. auditor (Afr. B. J. Brann) and to all who have assisted 1o further the interests of the club. The treasurer also conies in for his share of credit, the club’s finances being in a satisfactory condition.” AH. Thurston concluded by thanking Air. A. E. Hyde for the privileges granted in connection with “Alf’s Buttons,” nnd others who had donated trophies for competition, and Airs. V. Pope for her assistance during the season. Both Alessrs. E. T. AToody and J. T. Boris spoke in complimentary terms of the balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £27 10s. Both congratulated the club on having a most energetic treasurer in Air. Wright’. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Air. F. Thurston; vice-presidents, Messrs. J .T. Bo\ ? is, E. T. Aloody and AI. O’Reilley; hon. secretary-treasurer, Air.,A.. Wright; club captain, Air. G. G. Mitchell; vice-captain, AH. I. Edmonds; committee, Alesdames V. and H. Pope and W. Easton, and Alessrs. H. Norris, N. Batt and C. Brooker; hon. auditor, Afr. B. J. Brann; selection committee, captain, vice-captain, secretary and Airs. V. Pope. A lengthy discussion took place as to whether the club should or should not affiliate this year. Mr. Aloodv stated that he was not in favour of affiliation. No matches had been played last, season on account" of weather conditions and petrol restrictions, the affiliation fee being £2 ss. It was possible that the restrictions* -would preclude tho playing of any matches this year. The only advantage as far as lie could see was that certain privileges Avere accorded members visiting other clubs. Airs. Pope remarked that it was some ten years since a member

of the Shannon Club had taken part in the New Zealand championships. Opening day was tied for October 12 at

2.30 p.m., and it was decided to grant" the secretary-treasurer free membership. Air. Aloody said that it was his opinion that the club should encourage the school children to take up tennis as it. was from among them that the future members* of the club came. He suggested that it be a recommendation to the committee that school children be granted the use of the Courts on Saturday mornings proAriding that supervision could be arranged. Airs. V. Pope supported this suggestion which was agreed to.

Grandma Jackson and her young grandson were riding on a train. Grandma had dozed and suddenly she sat up. “What was the station the conductor called?” she asked the boy. “He didn’t announce any station; ho just put his head in the door and sneezed.” “Get the bundles together quickly,” said Grandma. “This is Oshkosh.”
