PALMERSTON NORTH SUBCOMMITTEE
Present at a meeting last night of the Palmerston North Sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society were: Alessrs. E. G. Alatthews (in tho chair), H. AV. Scott, H. AVare, C. P. Nash, AV. H. Hosking, A. Dale, AV. Best, E. E. AVard, T. AVare, H. Bird, H. G. H. Shaw and G. D. Burrows (hon. secretary).
Permission was deceived from the Palmerston North City Council for the use of the pond at tho Esplanade this year for rearing purposes, on the same terms as formerly.
The AVellington council wrote expressing appreciation of the work, done by the Palmerston North Sub-commit-tee in connection with fish research. The chairman reported that the subcommittee’s alloeaiton of 40,000 brown trout fry for the present season had come to hand and had been placed in the Esplanade pond after checking by Air. D. F. Hobbs, Alarine Department biologist. Last year ’s yield of yearlings had been 16 per cent., which was a record for New Zealand for brown trout and possibly for the world. Air. Alatthews asked members to give Air. Hobbs every assistance in the work that was being carried out. In connection with the Government’s proposal that there should be a closed shooting season, it was decided to ask that there should be a month’s season for ducks and the usual threo months for imported game. It was stated that there was no shortage of game in this district, and that no reason was apparent for the Government’s proposal. The Wairarapa South Sub-committee, it was reported, had already made a protest.
