Berlin Admits Heavy Damage * • WICKED ATTACK ON CIVILIANS” ANOTHER RAID SENDS BERLINERS UNDERGROUND Received Wednesday, 10.25 p.m. BERLIN, Sept. 25. It is officially admitted that the R.A.F. directly hit two Berlin factories. The flames in North Berlin were not controlled until late in the day. Bombs were dropped beside the gasworks, after which the pressure was very low in homes over a wide area. The inter-urban railway was damaged and traffic interrupted. One line was closed. All the morning and evening newspapers feature the R-A.F.’s ‘‘wicked attack on Berlin civilians” and reveal that a bomb crater at the gasworks is 30 feet wide. Other bombs tore huge holes in a dozen apartment houses and destroyed houses on the outskirts of the city.
A later Berlin message states that another air raid alarm which lasted 170 minutes sent Berliners scurrying to the shelters. High explosives and incendiaries were dropped, resulting in civilian victims. The raiders were apparently fewer than last night.
