(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Long, of Wanganui, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Bleaklcy over the week-end. Miss L. Rasmussen has returned from a holiday spent with her sister, Mrs. Goodiu, of Eltham. Fir. and Mrs. E. Markham have returned from Tahuna, Nelson, where they have been spending a holiday with the latter’s brother, Mr. A. Brett. Miss Edna Weaver, of Levin, has been staying for a few days with her sistor, Mrs. L. W. A. Miller, who lias also had the company of her niece, Miss Iva Weaver, of Dunedin. Pvte. M. Wilson is home on sick leave from Trentham. Mrs. R. Moore is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Anderson, “Grand View,” Hfilcombe. Pvts. P. Martin, J. Cox, E. Campbell, D. W. Holly, E. Marshall (Stanway) and A. Bush (Tokorarigi), members of the Third Echelon of the Second N.Z.E.F., now on leave from Trentham Military Camp, will be entertained b> the residents of the district at a social evening to be held in the Jubilee Hail on Saturday evening. Fir. R. Cawood when topping trees recently had tho misfortune to sustain an injury to a finger sufficiently serious to necessitate medical attention. The friends of Mrs. A. Managh, of “Royston Villa,” will bo sorry to hear that owing to sudden illness she has been obliged to enter hospital at Feildiug. The friends of Mrs. K. C. Anderson, who has recently been confined to bed on account of illness, will be pleased to learn that she is a little better. Mrs. A. Wapp paid a visit to the Waipukurau Sanatorium where her husband is at present a patient, it is reported that ho is making satisfactory progress toward recovery. Women’s Patriotic Committee. The Halcombc Women’s Patriotic Committee reports the forwarding of further parcels of goods to Zone E headquarters at Feildiug. These contained 43 balaclavas, 7 scarves, 26 pairs of mittens, 9 hussifs, 15 hot water bag covers, 54 food covers, 5 face cloths, and 10 hospital dittie bags. A third packing case of clothing for refugees was also forwarded. The committee wishes to thank those ladies and girls who donated gifts comprising seven balaclavas, two scarves and four pairs of mittens.
The Ladies’ Golf Club during the week-end played a flag match which was won by Mrs. J. J. O ’Sullivan, the position of runner-up being occupied by Mrs. G. Bevan. This week an eclectic competition will bo played, the draw for wbch is as follows: Miss B. Fcrgusson and Mrs. E. W. Cowdrey, Miss J. Fergusson and Mrs. D. C. Managh, Mrs. G. Bevan and Mrs. R. J. Managh, Mrs. L. Davies and Mrs. N. Ashworth, Mrs. G. Nicol and Mrs. L. Miller, Mrs. Nairn and Miss P, Fergusson, Mrs. R. D. Elgar and Miss O. M. Kerr, Mrs. J. O’Sullivan and Mrs. L. Fcrgusson, Mrs. J. Fcrgusson and partner. In the Silver Button challenge match, Mrs. J. O’Sullivan, the holder of the trophy, successfully withstood the challenge of Mrs. E. W. Cowdrey The chief interest for tile Men’s Golf Club was centred in the final match for the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup, played between J. O 'Sullivan and IL Fergusson. At the turn Fergusson, in receipt of two strokes, had a lead of two; but O’Sullivan won the next three holes in succession from his less experienced opponent. Both players had momentary lapses at the thirteenth, Fergusson winning the hole. The fourteenth was O’Sullivan’s; but Fergusson won the next two holes in bogey figures to take the lead with two to go. O’Sullivan, playing coolly, recorded a bogey 4 at the 17th and the players were onco again on even terms. At the 18th both were just short of the green with their seconds. Fergusson’s run-up third was short, but O’Sullivan, always confident on his short game, lay in a handy position. Fergusson’s putt left him still with a 2-footer; whilst O’Sullivan was almost there. Fergusson, left "with one chance to keep the match alive, failed in his effort, and O’Sullivan sank his fifth to win. A bogey competition was also played, the winner of the senior competition being I. Anderson with one up. The next best cards were those of I. Old one down and R. J. Managh two down. Tn the junior section L. Seigel returned the winning card, all square, the runner-up being R. D. Elgar one down. G. Nicol, the holder of the Silver Challenge But- ; ton survived two challenges during tho week-end, defeating L. Miller and G. Bevan. This week-end he will play E. W. Cowdrey, the next challenger on the list for the trophy. The following adjustments to handicap have been made: L. Anderson, 16 from 17; I. H. Old, 20 from 21; and L. Seigel, 28 from 31. Tho following team has been selected to play the visiting Beaconsfield Club team this week-end: G. Bevan, N. J. Anderson, L. Anderson, D. C. Managh, J. O ’Sullivan, R. J. Managh, I. Old, K. r Fergusson, R. Anderson, H. Fergusson, L. Miller, N. Ashworth, G. Nicol, E. W. Cowdrey, H. Jones, L. I'ergusson, C. Fergusson or L. Seigel, R. D. Elgar or S. Jones. It is possible that when the handicaps of the visitors are known • some changes in the team nominated t may be made. For those players not in j tho inter-club match, a Stableford bogey will be played.
