Shannon
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mrs. Gardner, Cambridge, has come down to stay with her mother, Mrs. W. Taylor, for a few weeks. A Rotorua visitor to Shannon is Mrs. Atkinson who is accompanied by her youngest son Victor. Mrs. Atkinson is looking up her friends iu the district and is staying with her mother, Mrs. E. Crowther, Clapham Road. The women’s institute evening card party held last week drew an attendance of 38 players. Mrs. J. Caldwell won the ladies 7 prize. Mrs. J. A. Easton playing as a man, won the men’s prize. Temperatures recorded in tho shade at Shannon for the month of July were as follows (the figures in brackets de--110 to those for July of last year):— Highest day temperaturo; 59 degrees on tho 14tb., (62 degrees on tho 10th.), and tho lowest, 47 degrees on the 7th, (42 degrees on the 26th.); highest night temperaturo, 50 degrees on tho 26th. and 27th., (55 degrees on tho Ist.), and the lowest, 32 degrees on the 9th., 24t.k., 29th., 30th., (28 degrees on the 27th. when snow fell). These figures were supplied by Mr. J. Hallam. July was a particularly dry month this year. Tho rainfall recorded at Mangaore was only 1.82 inches representing 32 wet days. For July of last year it was 5.59 inches which fell on 21 days. Buckley Ladies 7 Golr Tho programme for this Saturday is mixed foursomos and players are asked to bo at tho clubhouso at 1.15 p.m. sharp for the draw. Mrs. Reg. Graham was tho winner of the Stableford competition played last week-end with 41 points. Other good cards were handed in by Miss J. Park 39 points, Mrs. W. lliggio 35 points and Miss Lois Eastou 35 points. Mr. A. Gillespie (Shannon) was tho winner at the weekly meeting of tho Shannon-Mangaore Crib Club on Tuesday night. Three others, Messrs I. Fraser, H. Norris and E. Williams, tied for second place, and in tho play-off the first was successful.
At Mangaore a golf medal round will be played on Saturday, while on Sunday (August 11), a match is being played against Herrington Golf Club (Foxton), in w T hjch tho following will represent Mangaore:—K. Thomson, J. D. Campbell, B. Clayton, E. Murrow, I. Fraser, IL Murrow, H. Murray, C. Hook, R. Hook, J. Crawford, A. Blackwood, 11. Jameson and C. Singleton. An enjoyable evening was held on Wednesday night, when members of tho Shannon Badminton Club together with
a number of friends, including several from Levin and Ohau, foregathered to farewell two former club members who are now members of tho forces, Privates N. Better and L. Burling. Presentations of a cigarette case each to tho guests of honour were made on behalf of tho club by the president, Mr. V. Tippler.
