Visit of Dominion Secretary to Woodville
FILMS SHOWN The monthly meeting of the Woodville Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening when, in the absence of the president, Mr. K. Mitchell presided over a good attendance. The chairman extended a welcome to members who were present from surrounding clubs and also to Mr. S. Freeman, Dominion organiser of the movement, and Mr. F. T. S. Holden, provincial organiser. The treasurer reported on the financial statement of the recent dance which showed a substantial profit. The club made a donation of £1 15s to the Woodville Patriotic Fund. Details of the proposed debating contest between the various clubs were received from the district committee. The following teams were appointed to represent Woodville: —Senior: Messrs K. Mitchell, A. Curry, A. Compton. Junior: Messrs C. Arrow and O. Miller. The junior representatives are to choose ono more member for their team. Secretary’s Address. Mr. Freeman, who is also Dominion secretary of the movement, addressed the meeting and reported on the activities of the recent New Zealand conference held at Wellington. One of the most important topicß discussed, he ! Btated, was tho weliare of the clubs I during the war period. All delegates | were of the opinion that the Young Farmers’ Clubs should remain on their present basis. Their usefulness had oeen proved in the past and they could oe of even greater assistance to the Government in its war effort. The cry had been made for more food for the Mother Country and -the clubs could assist 'in the move in many ways. He stated that already it had been decideu that wherever possible all young farmers could rear a baconer pig. Arrangements had also been made >to collect scrap metals. The central organisation was trying to persuade the Government to pursue a scheme for the setting up of young farmers on farms of their own after the war. In conclusion, ne appealed to the members to unite in making their movement strong during wartime. During the serving of supper Mr. R. Day, of' the Ballanco Club, and Mr. K. Pride, of the Mangatainoka Club, thanked the Woodville Club for the evening’B entertainment. Thanks were also expressed by Mr. Holden to Mr. Freeman for his lecture. Following Mr. Freeman’s lecture, movie pictures on agricultural subjects were shown.
