British Thwart Effort to Scuttle Giant French Liner
NEW YORK, July 9.
It is reliably stated that efforts by the crew of the French liner Pasteur (30,000 tons) to scuttle the ship as she was anchored in Bedford Basin, near Halifax, Nova Scotia, were thwarted when an armed party of British sailors forced their way aboard and closed the sea cocks.
There was scuffling, but no gunfire.
The Pasteur sailed from New York on June 17 carrying munitions under tho British flag.
An Ottawa message states that it is officially denied that the crew attempted to scuttle the Pasteur.
A message from Tokio says that the 43,000-ton French luxury liner lie de France has been taken by the British at Singapore.
