Longburn Group Rally In Palmerston North

A meeting of the Longburn Group of Women's Institutes was held in tho Jade tea-rooms yesterday, Mrs. A. Pierard (Longburn) presiding over an excellent attendance, associated with her being Mrs. Craven (convener). Welcoming the members, Mrs. "Pierard expressed her pleasure in the occasion and in the sunny day that favoured tho rally. She voiced particular pleasure in tho presence of the Mayoress, Mrs. A. E. Mansford, and expressed gratification on her return to health. (Miss M. Grant, president of Manawatu Federation, was also welcomed, j The door hostesses were Mesdames H. 1 Bartlett and E. Carne (Mllson). I Voicing her appreciation of the invitation to be present and of the warm welcome accorded her, Mrs. Mansford | based her following remarks on sentiments expressed in the aspirations recited at the opening of the meeting. j“Let us leave off fault-finding and selfseeking, " she said, “and we shall have goodwill.'* It would not be long before a different state would dawn, she continued, as wc had been assured, the darkest hour was before the dawn. She asked the women to throw in their weight in helping the refugees and assured them all there was lots of work to do. “If we all lived up to those aspirations we must come out on t6p," Mrs. Mansford concluded. , Mrs. Pierard endorsed these remarks. A letter in appreciation of greetings on the occasion of her marriage from the group was received from Mrs. M. J Dyniock, formerly Miss F. Whittaker. Miss Grant returned thanks for the welcome and the opportunity of speak ing to the group about the craft classos being organised by Mr. S. M. Williams, tutor under the Adult Education <Council, to commenco in Palmerston North in June. She reminded members that . the next contribution of soldiers' comforts was required before June SO, par- , cels to be left at the Patriotic Shop. Matters concerning the Dominion conference were mentioned and further , particulars given of tho display for th« , Winter Show. Shoulder sprays made by Aokautere members were presented to Mrs. MansJford and Miss Grant. Mrs. S. Oxenham, Whakarongo, waa elected chairman for the next group rally and tho nomination of Mrs. W. M. McClelland (Kairanga) was received as convener.

Pleasure was provided by Mesdames J. Riddle and N. Williamson with pianoforte duets, tho performers being presented with shoulder sprays.

j The Art of Make-up. J A most interesting and instructive talk on “make-up" was given by Miss Babette Rodgers with a practical demonstration on Mrs. Craven, to stress her points. Giving some general rules ■ regarding a good basis, Miss Rodgers said the secret of good make-up was to strike a happy medium in the cold cream, not to have the foundation too greasy or too dry. She went on to speak of general rules intimating that liberty could be taken and that colout must depend on the character of the person to be portrayed. Lighting had to be taken into consideration also, and

the age of the person. At tho request of the meeting Miss Rodgers demonstrated tho makeup of a middle-aged woman which was followed with keen interest.

Miss Rodgers was thanked by Mrs. Pierard and presented with a shoulder spray.

There were two competitions judged by Mrs. Mansford which resulted: Art felt article, Mrs. Currie 1, Mrs. Schneil 2 (both of Ashhurst); scones, Mrs, H. Turner 1, Miss Kilgour 2 (both of Ashhurst).

Appreciation of Mrs. Craven's services as convener was expressed by Mrs. Pierard who also presented her with a shoulder spray. The following institutes answered the roll call: Aokautere, Ashhurst, Kairanga, Longburn, Milsou, Tiakitahuna, Tiritca, Whakarongo and Kelvin Grove is to be invited to-join the group.

A comprehensive vote of thanks was conveyed by Mrs. Pierarfl to the artists, door hostessess, to Mrs. Hansford for judging the competitions, and all who had assisted, a similar compliment being paid Mrs. Pierard. The question was raised as to whether tho group rallies should be abandoned meantime and the delegated were asked to take this suggestion back to the institutes for decision.
