Thefts at Ngawapurua

MAORI PLEADS GUILTY AND IS ADMITTED TO PROBATION Charged with the theft on May ID, 1940, of articles valued at £1 15s, the property of Howard Erickson, of Ngawapurua, and with the theft on May 20, 1940, of about £6 Cs in money, the property of Eric Gcorgo Cowan, also of Ngawapurua, a Maori, Ernest Neketai, aged 20, a farm labourer, of Te Puke, appeared before Mr. H. I*. Lawry, S.M., in the Woodville trate’s Court yesterday. Ho pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to bo dealt with summarily. Constable L. Skinner read a statement by accused which outlined the circumstances leading up to his arrest. Neketni bad four previous convictions for theft, one at To Puke in 3937 and throe others in 1935. Continuing, Con stable Skinner stated that accused appeared to be a good worker on a farm but was helpless when out by himself. All of the articles and about £4 of tho money had been so far recovered, said Constable Skinner, while Nfcketai had promised to produco the remainder of the stolen cash. Prisoner was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution as required by the Probation Officer.
