No New Works For Kiwitea County

CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REVIEW At the annual meeting of the Kiwitea County' Council yesterauy tho chairman (Cr. L. T. McLean) reviewed the past year's activities, saying that the year was commenced with a credit balance of £684 16s hd and closed with a credit of £333 18s 4d. The rate position had oecn well maintained, approximately 99 per cent, having oeeu paid. All main hignways in the county liad been well maintained notwithstanding the extraordinary damage done during the storm last spring. Owing to -county' roads suffering also the council nad been ealled upon to expend a considerable sum over und above tuo estimates and ho was pleased to say that all the roads had been placed iu good order, in this connection ne jiaid a tribute to the work of tho overseer, Mr. J. ilallinan, who had liad a very trying year, working long hours to achieve tho desired result. The council, he was sure, appreciated very much Mr. ilallinan’s efforts in the interests of the ratepayers. Additional plant had been purchased during tho year and this was all in excellent order while employees’ houses were in good condition. Hospital levies for the ensuing year showed a slight reduction and the rate for this purpose would remain unaltered.

Dealing with the public debt of the county, the chairman said that it had been reduced by £4895 Gs 2d during tho year by reason of the maturity of several loans. At March 31 last tho public debt stood at £58,2*72 5s Id. He went on to say that loans totalling £5055 14s lOd would mature in February next, thus further reducing the debt of the county’.

After reviewing the receipts and expenditure, Cr. McLean concluded as follows: “I desiro to express to you my sincere thanks for your .Joy’al support and co-operation during the past year; also the officials and staff for the manner in which they have carried out their respective duties. In view of the uncertain state of affairs existing at the present juncture, consequent upon the war, coupled with the high cost of materials and services and the general desire to copservc petrol supplies, it is not desirable that any new works should bo put iu hand during the war period.'
