Popular County Chairman Re-elected

CE. ABCII CAMPBELL, OP OEOUA Unanimously re-elected to tho chair ho has occupied for many years on the Oroua County Council, Cr. A. Campbell, in returning thanks at the annual meeting of tho council yesterday, said that ho appreciated very sincerely the honour councillors had done him. It was gratifying to him to know that what little ho had been able to do, had given satisfaction to those so closely concerned with the administration of the county’s affairs. Cr. Campbell went on to state that in view of the crisis facing tho Empire to-day ho had not prepared any report because ho felt that the country’s interests were of greater concern. However, he wished to record his thanks to fel-low-councillors for the sincere manner in which they had watched tho affairs of the county. lie had also to thank the insido and outside staff for their cooperation. Everyone had pulled his weight and served the interests of the county particularly well.

I , had intended that tho council consider the estimates to-day, but in view of certain correspondence from tho Public Works Department I feci it would bo wise to defer consideration until we know more details. The chances are that wo may be called upon to do certain things which we will not like to do. There is no doubt that the petrol restrictions will have some influence on our policy but whatever happens it will be for the county to do its job as efficiently as tho means at our disposal will permit. ’ ’ Alluding to tho indisposition which caused him to bo absent from the council tabic, Cr. Campbell went on to say that he hoped to be able to carry on and shoulder tho responsibility of the position he held and it would be his aim to further the interests of the ratepayers to the utmost of his ability. (Applausc.) Proceedings for the election of a chairman were opened by Cr. W. McLennan, who had pleasure in proposing Cr. Campbell. The speaker paid a warm tribute to Cr. Campbell’s services and said that ho unquestionably held the confidence of the ratepayers. Cr. B. McLeod seconded the proposal and * eulogised the work done by Cr. Campbell. Cr. T. Green endorsed tho remarks of other speakers and said that there was no doubt that councillors had chosen the best man for the position. He was satisfied that the administration of the county was in good hands. Cr. A. B. Shannon said that the record of the county was one which gave every councillor justification for feeling proud. “We should congratulate ourselves in having Cr. Campbell’s services for a further term,” he concluded. Cr. R. Stew r art supported tho proposal ; and thanked Cr. Campbell for the help he had accorded a “new chum.” Cr. W. Page, w r ho took his scat l'or , the first time, was happy to endorse ; the remarks of the previous speakers.

The motion was then carried unani mously.

The following committees were then elected:—Finance, Crs. T. Green and B. McLeod with tho chairman; machinery and works, Crs. W. McLennan, W. S. Page, R. Stewart and A. B. Shannon. ness of tho county would then be very small indeed. The meeting agreed to the course of action suggested. Touching on correspondence from the Zone E Centennial Committee regarding the Mt. Stewart pioneers’ memorial, Cr. Campbell said that lie was sure the council had no regrets for tho part it had played in the erection of this tribute to the memory of the pioneers of the district. Councillors could assure themselves that the memorial would be. well cared for by the Manawatu County Council and the Sandon Old Boys’ Association. Councillors supported the chairman and said that tho council had done the right thing by contributing to the cost of the memorial. Mr. W. Gray, of Aorangi, wrote requesting attention to a drain adjacent; to his property. —The county clerk said that tho troublo had been remedied. Mr. W. D. Williamson, Colyton, requested attention to a creek opposite his property. —Tho council decided that it could not accept responsibility for cleaning out creeks. Mr. R. Sliortall, Colyton, wrote complaining about certain rubbish being deposited on his road frontage.—The council agreed to tako action to have the rubbish removed by the person responsible.
