Young Farmers’ Club

MEETING OF WELLINGTON COUNCIL MR. E. W, BARNETT RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN The second annual meeting of the Wellington Council of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers* Club t was held in Pelmerston North yester-' day. The council’s district extends from Poverty Bay to the Wairarapa on ; the east coast and from North Taranaki to the Manawatu on the west coast and most of tho districts were represented. The chairman of the Wellington Council, Pilot-Officer E. W. Barnett, was present before the business commenced but he went away to attend the funeral of the late H. B. Stuckey at Dannevirke and until ho returned Mr. W. F. McLaren, Rangitumau, Masterton, presided. Before the reading of the minutes the chairman made feeling reference to the death of Mr. Stuckey and a motion of sympathy was carried in silence. Among the apologies was a letter from Mr. W. Browlee, of Wairoa, the vice-president of the council. The report and balance sheet were taken as read and adopted with very little comment. Correspondence. Included in the correspondence wero letters from a number of districts and all of them made eulogistic reference to the work of tho secretary, Mr. F. E. Sherwood, who had found it necessary to relinquish his duties. These expressions of appreciation were summed up and in tho president’s report, Mr. Barnett’s reference to tho work of Mr. Sherwood being as follows: “This report would not be complete without some reference to our secretary* Mr. F. E. Sherwood, and the work done by him during the past year. He has thrown into his work, not keenness and enthusiasm, but has devoted to it a considerable amount of time outside office hours, assisting with many of our varied activities in a practical manner as well as carrying out his I secretarial duties. Of particular value ! also has been the time and interest 1 w*hich he has put into tho weekly broadcasts from 2ZA. Unfortunately I have to report that, duo to pressure of other work, Mr. Sherwood finds it necessary to relinquish his position as secretary, a position which ho has filled with distinction and success and with great advantage to our Council. Much as wo regret this decision, wo realise that, although Mr. Sherwood will not take the same administrative part in our organisation as previously, such is his keenness for it that he will still do

all in his power to assist us.” ‘ | Mr. J. H. Bremner (Pahiatua) spoke on e ■ behalf of tho council and he thought ‘ 'effect should be given to Mr. Brown- £ lee’s suggestion that Mr. Sherwood j should be co-opted. t Mr. McLaren agreed that the sugges- t lion put forward by Mr. Brownlee and ( Mr. Bremner was the ono that could j well be adopted. 1 Mr. R. O. Gloyn (Rongotea) moved j that a letter of thanks and appreciation € should be *gnt Mr. Sherwood through the controlling offico. Mr. Sherwood said that his association with the council had been very pleasant and that ho much. regretted the necessity of sending in his resigna- t lion. Ho wished the council every ( success. . J There was considerable discussion ( about tho amount to be allocated to tho ( Wanganui district to cover the cost of j running the provincial live stock judging competition, Tield at Marton, and it ( was resolved that it should bo £l6. j Some time was spent considering tho proposed centennial tree-planting scheme and Mr. L. Feierabend said that ( the Danuevirke Club had bceu given their trees and that it was going to cost them 10s to plant and protect each tree. He added that the cost was going to ; prove rather prohibitive. ( Election of Officers. Officers for the ensuing year were ■ elected as under: —Chairman, PilotOfficer E. W.
