Christians Arise
PULPIT APPEAL TO FIGHT The unusual spectacle of a minister of religion challenging himself as to his duty' in the present crisis, was witnessed in £?t. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Palmerstoa North, yesterday morning. In the pulpit was Rev. J. Hubbard and he said be had been asked if he could face a German minister of religion and deliberately' shoot him as an act in the war. This was his answer: “I know that in doing so I would be helping to end a regime that has as its aim tho smashing of Christianity and all that is right and decent in the world.” Rev. Hubbard explained that it was unfortunate that the only way they could deal with Hitler was by dealing with Germany as a nation. The German people could not be separated from their rulers. He further declared that latv and order could only be preserved by force. Christians could not stand out of the present struggle; if they did they' would be faithless to God. Rev. Hubbard said he was sorry to see New Zealand so supine; oven tlie Government was careless in issuing a clarion call. He hoped all would deprecate any talk as to why we were in the struggle. There was no comparison in history with the crimes of modern Germany. A capacity congregation included representatives of the St. John Ambulance and Red Cross organisations in the city.
