Gossip From the Golf Courses

PATRIOTIC FUND DAY OVER £3O RAISED Some weeks ago the New Zealand Golf Club circularised clubs asking that they set aside one day during April for tho purpose of raising funds for the Fighting Services’ Welfare Appeal. The Manawatu Golf Club arranged their tournament for the week-end and the competitions were a four-ball bogey and a four-ball Stableford. The weather was fine and the Hokowhitu course iu first-class order and there was. a very big entry of Manawatu players and players from neighbouring clubs, particularly from Palmerston North. The four-ball bogey was played in the morning and the best cards were 5 up, and in the Satbleford the winuing pairs each collected 42 points. The leading cards were as under:— Four-ball Bogey Handicap N. Hume and L. Corkill .... sup N. Forbes and G. Stubbs .... sup R. W. Ramsay and D. Tottman 4 up F. Ward and E. As tin 4 up F. Jolly and E. R. Chapman . . 4up W. W. Smith and N. H. Anion 3 up 11. Smith and K. Dawkins .. 3up Four-ball Stableford Pts. W. W. Smith and N. H. Amon .. 42 K. S. Glendinning and A. E. Hansel 42 E. Astin and F. W. Wurd .... 40 M. T. Church and H. Hill 39 L. F. Speechley and L. Cooper .. 39 E. E. Mabin and J. W. Taylor .. 39 I). Wiseman and N. Hume .. .. 38 E. Ward and A. Cusdiu 38 M. Mace and L. T. Aitchison .. 38 The tournament was run by Mr. K. G. Chamberlain and the official starters were Messrs. J. R. Galloway and Peter Barraud, who put in their spare time gathering additional subscriptions for tho Fighting Fund, being responsible) tor £8 of the over £3O amount by which the fund will benefit as a result of the tournament.

At the conclusion of play Mr. B. E. Keiller, president of the* Manawatu Golf Club, stated that the tournament had been a very successful one and he thanked his fellow members for giving such fine support and players from Palmerston North, who had come from Awatapu in such strong force. He hoped that Palmerston North’s tournament, which is beiDg held next weekend, would be all that, was hoped and lliat. Manawatu members would give it every support.
