A widely known and highly respected resident of the Colyton district in the person of Mr. R. W. Brown passed away at Fcilding yesterday following a brief illness. In consideration of their veteran services, Messrs W. McKenzie and H. J, Canton were elected honorary life members of the Manawatu Justices Association at the meeting on Wednesday, At the afternoon assembly at the Palmerston North Boys’ High Bchool on Thursday a presentation was made to Mr. A. W. Lcet, who is retiring from the office of caretaker after over 30 years’ service. An electric clock and an electric lamp were presented to him ou behalf of the schoolboys by Mr. Andrew Campbell, the head prefect. Tho intention of Mr. E. It. Webb, bursar of Christ’s College, to rctiro next year, was announced at the school prize-giving by the headmaster (Mr. K. J. Richards). Mr. Webb was a fellow of the college before being appointed bursar 23 years ago. He is one of the few r life members of the Old Boys’ Association, of which ho lias been both president and secretary.

When the staff of the College Street School met at the interval yesterday morning the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr. R. W. Park who is to be married shortly. On behalf of tho school staff, the headmaster (Air. L. J. Plank) made tho presentation of an electric toaster to Mr. Park, and with it he said went the best wishes of the staff for Mr. Park and his future wife.

Air. J. B. Stewart, who has been the manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., at Palmerston North for about two years and who leaves at tho week-end for Dunedin, whence he has been transferred on promotion as manager there, was met by tho staff at Palmerston North on Thursday and made a suitable presentation. Mr. E. It. Eames, in handing Air. Stewart a gift, extended best wishes to Mr. and Airs. Stewart in their new sphere.

Mr. F. J. Whelan, who recently retired from tho position of locomotive foreman at Palmerston North, was met at a large gathering of Railway Department officers and presented, ou behalf of the staff, by Mr. It. Black (locomotive engineer, Wellington) with a canteen of cutlery, a smoker’s outfit, and a cut glass salad bowl for Mrs. Whelan. Eulogistic reference was made to Air. Whelan’s services byspeakers representative of the various sections of the railway service with whom ho has come in contact and best wishes were extended to hm and Airs. Whelan for their life at New Plymouth, where they now reside. Mr. Whelan joined the service of the department in 1899 and was subsequently stationed at various places throughout the North Island. From the position of road foreman at Fraukton he came to Palmerston North in 1930 as assistant foreman and was appointed locomotive foreman in 1932. Air. T. Dick, senior assistant foreman at Palmerston North, is acting foreman until a permanent up> ooi&tnient is luudv.
