School Committees

CENTRAL SCHOOL Tho Central School Committee met on Wednesday evening, the chairman (Mr. H. Patterson) presiding. In his report the headmaster (Mr. E. Bary) stated that the average attendance for the present term had been 70S and the present roll was 751. Official notice had been received that the school had been placed in Grade VI K for .1940 and that it would be staffed in staffing sub-grade VI J/K. At the end of November Mr. Iv. C. M. Cockerill loit the school as he had been accepted for military service. During the period he had been on tho staff lie had proved himself a popular teacher and the school wished him well in his military career. This term Miss G. Sergeant, an exchange teacher from London, had been attached to the staff. Miss (Sergeant left on a fortnight's levao on December 1 and was returning to England at the beginning of the new year; the schod wished her « happy and safe return. The gala and parents’ day proved very successful again and Mr. Bary thanked tho committee and ladies’ committee for their co-opera-tion. The Christmas Tree for tho infant department was held yesterday afternoon and was well attended by parents. On behalf of tho staff Mr. Bary extended to the committee tho compliments of the season.—The report was adopted. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr. Cockerill, wishing him a successful career in the Army and a safe return. Tho baths caretaker (Mr. F. N. O’Connor) reported that ho had received many inquiries for season tickets and he recommended that the committee increase the present concession. It was decided to alter the concession for season tickets for tho baths. The action of the baths caretaker’ in effecting repairs to the baths and seating was (approved. The committee resolved to forward a letter of appreciation and a contribution of £2 2s to Mr. Petrie for repairing the school’s cinema projector. A resolution expressing thanks to Mr. Bary and tho staff and their loyal cooperation, and wishing them the compliments of tho season, was passed. Thanks were also conveyed to tho ladies’ committee for their efforts in connection with tho gala day. It was stated that £2O was realised at this function.

WEST END SCHOOL Mr. G. Tremaine presided at a meeting of tho West End (School Committee on Wednesday evening. I The Wanganui Education Board ad-

vised that Mr. B. W. Turnbull was commencing his duties as supernumerary teacher. —Received. Mr. and Mrs. W. Collins wrote thanking the committee for their message of sympathy in their recent bereavement. Mr. S. C. Rosser wrote tendering his resignation from tho staff. Mr. Tremaine said that Mr. Rosser was an energetic teacher and had the pupils’ welfare at heart. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr. Rosser thanking him for his services. Letters of appreciation are to be sent to Misses Lvail and Nicdercr thanking them for their services. The headmaster (Mr. 11. W. Jackson) stated, inter alia: “Tho roll number is 471. Although 48 pupils aro leaving this year, difficulty is anticipated in providing accommodation. Three teachers, Mr. S. C. Rosser and Misses Lyall and Nicdercr sever their connection with the school this term. Mr. Rosser has been doing excellent work and lam sorry to lose his services. Misses Lyall and Nicderer were probationary assistants. Mr. Buckman has commenced his duties as caretaker. The girls have done well in the sports this year, havnig wou the junior basketball and tho senior and junior baseball championships.”
