Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf has been appointed a member of tho Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College for a term of three years. Mr. J. Connor, headmaster of the Russell Street School, is an inmate of a private hospital, where he underwent an operation on one of his hands. Mr. Guy Conn.al, formerly of Tc Awamutu, has taken up his duties as manager of the Palmerston North branch of the Union Bank of Australia. Mr. Guy McCallan has been appointed Crown solicitor at New Plymouth for the period of absence on military service of Captain R. 11. Quilliam, states a Gazette notice. At a recent meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors, Mr. S. G. Bowers, of Wellesbourne Street, was apopinted caretaker at the Boys’ Hi~h School. Leave of absence was granted by the Palmerston North Fire Board yesterday to Fireman E. A. Stratton, who has been called up for service with the Air Force. Rabbi J. Danglow, of St. Hilda, Melbourne, arrived at Auckland by tho Monterey on a holiday visit to Now Zealand. Ho was accompanied by his wife. Rev. G. H. McNeur, veteran founder of the Canton Mission of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, and Mrs. McNeur aro to leave Canton early next month on their way back to New Zealand. Professor Sir Thomas A. Hunter and Mr. R. A. Candy, two retiring representatives of the Council of tho School of Agriculture on tho Board of Governors of Massey College, have been tcappointed for a further term.

News was received in Palmerston North yesterday that Jack Nort.hey, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Northey, of Palmerston North, and the only expupil of tho Palmerston North Boys’ High School at present studying at the Auckland University, had been successful in all his degreo subjects, gaining in Crime, Torts and Properties which represents the completion of the second stage of his law degree. Mr. E. P. Neilscn, of Palmerston North, who has been supervisor of the Wellington District Pig Council, i 3 joining the staff of the New Zealand Dairy Board as an extension officer who will assist Herd Recording Associations in furthering herd testing and showing its usefulness to farmers. He will operate in the Wellington district. The resignation was accepted by the Pig Council last evening with regret and appreciation was expressed of the valuable work he had done in the interests of pig production. Mr. E. E. Elphick, veterinarian of the Department of Agriculture, was the recipient of a presentation from the office staff of a reading lamp prior to his departure for Christchurch. From the Public Services Cricket Club, of which Mr. Elphick was an enthusiastic supporter, Mr. R. P. Gilder presented him with a wallet. Mr. Elphick was also made a presentation cf a barometer from the meat inspectors of Feilding and Palmerston North. Messrs. J. Brydon Speedy (Palmerston North) and G. H. Jarrett (Feilding) spoke of the work done by the departing officer and congratulated him on his appointment. Major C. A'. Sugden, N.Z.S.C., has been appointed second in comand of the 27th. Machine-gun Battalion, First' Echelon, Special Force. He has been acting for some weeks as camp commandant at Waiouru. A graduate of the Royal Military College of Australia, Major Sugdcu has been 20 years with the New Zeaglaud Staff Corps. His appointments over this period included servico in India from 1920 to 3 922. He has been stationed at Trent ham, Palmerston North, Mastei'ton, Wcllinton, Nelson aud Blenheim, and at tho outbreak of war was adjutant of the Ist. Battalion of tho Canterbury Regiment at Christchurch. Promoted captain in 1926, Major Sugden was one .of a number of staff corps officers promoted to the rank of major at the beginning of the war.
