Makerua Drainage Board
MONTHLY MEETING HELD Trustee H. Seifert presided at yesterday’s meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board and there were present Trustees G. T. W. Clifford, W. Jackson, J. D. Aitchison, H. Samcs and H. Alexander. Tenders are to be called for Wright’s main drain stop bank. Following negotiations with tho Horowhenua County Council and Mr. It. Prier, willow planting and fencing is to bo carried out on a portion of tho old Foxton-Shannon Road area near tho river. An open cut is also to be put in from the excavation to the river. In response to a request for information as to whether the Taupanga Cut was to be developed further the Minister of Public Works stated that ho would write to the board as soon as lie had an opportunity of fully reviewing tho matter. A deputation, for which Mr. A. Seifert was spokesman, requested improved drainago in the vicinity of Campbell’s Road at Opiki. Tho present drain was so shallow that it was of no value. A new drain was suggested. The board resolved to get tho necessary levels so that they could consider the position and to submit the proposal made by the deputation to the board’s solicitor to find out what was the position in regard to the board’s liability. Mr. A. P. Grant, river engineer of the Public Works Department, advised that in regard to erosion in Nott’s property on the Manawatu River near Poplar tho loss of land had not been very great in the last two years. There appeared to be a tendency for the current to set in towards the other bank and the present erosion trouble might proceed very rapidly. Only light protection work was recommended at an estimated cost of £IOO. The board decided to adopt the report and proceed with tho work recommended. The financial statement showed that the bank overdraft was £4366 12s 6d. To date 9.6 per cent, of the current year's rates had been paid, amounting to £l2Ol 10s lOd. The overseer, Mr. P. Y. Tucker, reported:— During tho month 17 chains of willow pole and netting work has been carried out at Hansen’s Bend, also 19 chains of fencing erected. The total cost including fencing was £137 12s 3d. The poles were procured from Mr. A. W. Aker’s property above Rage’s Point. The cleaning of the intersecting channel is in progress, and to date the junction with the Old Main Drain has been reached. The planting of willows along the lower reaches of Manawatu River by No. 13 scheme men has been completed to the Whitanui-Poplar bound- : ary. Two of these men are now engaged clearing willows from the Tokomaru River, starting at Okuku Road bridge. Five No. 13 scheme workers have been engaged reconditioning Seifert’s outlet and, when this work is completed, they also will be transferred to the clearing of Tokomaru River.
