Grand Interhouse Demonstrations

P.D.C. Retain Chamber of Commerce Shield Eleven Business Girls’ Teams Take Part P.D.C., last year’s champions, retained the Chamber of Commerce Shield by defeating 10 other teams in the 1939 Palmerston North Business Girls’ Inter-house Association’s championship demonstration at the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. The winning team’s performance was all the more commendable when it is considered that a particularly high standard prevailed throughout the competitions.

The function was a colourful one, in fact one of the most attractive events of the year in this city. Although it has already gained considerable popularity, it is worthy of far greater support by a city of a population of about 24,000. The judge of the marching, drill and tableau was Mr. W. S. Ferguson, of Wellington, and the judges of the costumes Mrs. K. Armor and Miss J. Amncr, of Napier. EVENTS IN THE AFTERNOON Championship Decided Proceedings at the Showgrounds in the afternoon opened with a march past of intcr-housc teams, Girls’ High School pupils and Territorials. The grand parade, headed by the Garrison Band, marched half round the oval and drew no small measure of applause from tho crowd, which numbered well over two thousand. The parade was a particularly striking one, one of the best of its typo that has been held in Palmerston North. Fupils of the Girls’ High School played an important part. Half of them immediately followed the Garrison Band aud ahead of the 11 teams which took part in tho intcr-houso sports. Then followed the remainder of the High School girls, the Highland Pipe Band, and the Territorials (two platoons of infantry). Having marched half round the oval the procession drew up on tho field, across which they advanced towards tho main grandstand, making an imposing display. Addressing tho gathering, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) said many saw the inter-house demonstration for the first timo last year and were agreeably surprised at the fine performance; many had not seen a better exhibition. There were then eight teams competing. To-day 11 were taking part, indicating the growing popularity of 'intcr-housc sports. He was suro that I firms not already taking part would give their support. Next year it was hoped teams from other towns in the Manawatu would bo included. The young ladies had practised constantly for weeks, said Mr. Mansford, and ho was suro the spectators would lend them every encouragement. It was very gratifying that tho principal and sports mistress of the Girls’ High School had supported the occasion. He thanked the Garrison and Pipe Bands for their share in the proceedings, and congratulated tho Business Girls’ Interhouse Association and the organiser, Mr. J. Eagle, who were chiefly responsible, and also the teams. The championship demonstration then took place, revealing _ a standard improving, if possible, upon that of last year. The teams took part in all the events with confidence and precision which won each on ovation. Perhaps the most attractive contest was the tableau, which was to bo all the more appreciated when it was considered the girls had to contend with a strong, gusty wind. The concluding event of the afternoon, and a great spectacle in itself, was a massed drill display by pupils of the Girls’ High School. Several hundred girls faultlessly performed complicated exercises under tho direction of their drill mistress, Miss J. Galvin.
