Giant Barter Agreements
Will Sell Only to Britain and France ARGENTINE’S DECISION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 7.10 p.m. BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 21. Tho Argentine Government has announced its intention to prevent purchases for countries other than Britain and France for the duration of the war. The Exchange Control Bureau Director, Senor Alfredo Louro, states that he is refusing requests for exchange for importations from other countries for merchandise which can in some form be acquired by Britain. He added: “The Argentine must increase its dependence on the Runciman Agreement of 1933 and buy from those who buy from us. ’ ’ Senor Lour,o said the repercussions of the war on Argentine economy were very different from those of 1914. ’’We must import, and even facilitate imports, in order to provide foreign exchange for countries buying our crops and meat. ’ ’ The Buesnos Aires correspondent of the New Y,ork Times states that commercial circles believe the announcement portends giant combined barter compensation agreements.
