Zoo Additions From East
SEVERAL UNUSUAL EXHIBITS Several exceptionally fine exhibits lor the Auckland Zoo arrived from Singapore by the Tasman. They comprised an orang-outang, three Gibbon apes, a golden cat, a pair of Argus pheasants and a fireback pheasant. All the stock was in excellent condition on arrival and the animals were almost immediately taken to their new quarters for display during the weekend. The birds were landed yesterday. Probably the most interesting of tho collection is the orang-outang, a species which has not been displayed at the zoo for many years, A female about three years old, she is reddish brown in colour and extremely active, being double-jointed in practically every joint. She has been placed on exhibition with the chimpanzee and it appears that they will soon become fatt friends.
According to the curator, LieutenantColonel E. R. Sawer, the Gibbon apes are the finest specimens that the zoo has ever imported. Jfiey represent three types, gloved, silvery and masked, the last type not having been exhibited in Auckland before. Angry in disposition, but beautiful
in its markings, the golden cat is a native of Siam and is another species that the zoo is putting on display lor the first time. Somewhat larger than the domestic animal, the wild cat immediately attracts attention with its fierce bristling whiskers, long twitching tail, and deep, wide-open eyes.
