Women’s Institute

TIAKITAHUNA There was a good attendance of members at tho October meeting when Mrs. H. N. McEwcn presided. The treasurer’s report showed a substancial credit balance. An invitation from Longburn Women's Institute was received, to bo their guests at a joint general meeting in December, when Miss Hazel Johnson of Massey College will give an address on "Food Conservation.’’ It was decided that the committee discuss any business pending for that day. It was also decided that a Christmas tree and party be held in December, and preliminary arrangements were made. Misses L. Hcarley and K. Walker were appointed in charge of the tree. The hostesses for the evening will be Mesdames, W. F. and H. McEwen and B Morley. A very interesting talk ou her island cruise was given by Mrs. N. P. Nielson, one of our members, and was very much enjoyed by all. BUNITYTHORPE Mrs. Jackson presided over a good attendance of members at the October meeting, welcoming many visitors. Mrs. Greener was elected a member. Apologies were received from Mesdames Leete, Butler and McMillan. Owing to tho indisposition of Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Toms was elected as a delegate to the council meeting to be held in Palmerston North on October 25. The social item was a pianoforte solo bygrMrs. L. O. Jones, who responded to an encore. The "golden thread" talk was given by Mrs. Harris, who chose as her subject tho Waitomo Caves, describing how they wero discovered and tho waytourists aro now conducted through the caves. Step by step, her listeners went with her through tho various caves, saw the stalactite and stalagmite, and revelled in the fairy walk and glow worm cave. Mrs. Weastcll’s baby' (another budding member) received her moneybox containing contributions. An amusing play', "Automatic Servant," evoked screams of laughter from the audience; those taking part wero Mesdames Harris, Faulkner and Jackson. The competition for a thrift article for tho homo was won by Mrs. Donald with « rug mat, Mrs. Guard being second with an article made from coconut shell; best bloom, Mrs. Burrell 1, Mrs. Baker 2. Competitions for the November meeting will bo the best bloom and tapestrywork. There will also be the usual sales table and the."golden thread" talk, to be given by Mesdames Baker and Wood. Hostesses are Mesdames Bickuell, Burrell, Leete and Marshall. GLEN OROUA The September meeting took place with a good attendance of members, Mrs. Wheeler presiding. Apologies for absence w r ere received from Mesdames Ihle, Evans, Milne, Wallace and Miss Pearson. The two members w-ho wero elected, Mesdames Larsen and V aliender, are to attend the W.D. birthday party. A notice w r as received from Carnarvon W.I. of their coming show. Tho demonstration for the afternoon was on smocking by Mesdames Davey, Bailey and Vallender. Competitions for the month resulted as foliowsly-Best bloom, Miss E. Sadd 1, Miss M. Vallender 2, Miss J. Vallender 3; queen cakes, Mrs. Walshe 1, Mrs. Saunders 2, Mrs. Hills 3; set of oven, towel, kettle and teapot holders, Mrs. Vallender 1, Mrs. Saunders 2, Mrs. Lawlor 3. The judges were Mesdames H. Hamlin and O ’Connor, tho hostesses being Mrs. Larsen, Misses Robinson, Vallender and Farmer. Tho competition for November will be for the best arranged vase of flowers and foliage; dripping; short pastry (custard tart), and a demonstration will be given by Mrs. Lawlor ("Sand Plate"),, also a talk by Miss Hazel Johnson. Hostesses will be Mesdames S.aunders, Sadd, Schaw and Miss Robinson.
