Rongotea

At the monthly meeting of the school committee Air. W. Amies presided. There were also present Alessrs. Hill, C. Lind, L. Simonsen, H. L. Rowe, and the head teacher, Mr. W. Churchill. The chairman reported that during the holidays the school had been scrubbed and the floors oiled, while a drain had been opened out through the school shrubbery. Arrangements were made to have the school lawns mowed, as there was too big an expanse for the boys to attend to. As an Arbor Day effort 20 trees had been planed out into the school shrubbery, all of which had been grown in the school nursery. The sum of £3 16s 3d had been received from Air. Banks as the school's share of the picture benefit, a good amount considering that the night of the picture had been one of the worst of the year. Mr. Rowe referred to the passing of a former head teacher, Air. C. Liggins, who had been held in high esteem throughout the district. The secretary also reported on calf club activities, stating that a few donations had yet to bv collected. The annual meeting of No. group will be held shortly. Rongotea R.5.A. The monthly meeting of the committee was held last Thursday. The secretary, Mr. G. Wenborn, reported that several badges had come to hand, and these were gradually being brought up to date. Alernbers handed in names of a few who had not yet received badges, and the secretary, was instructed to make the matter urgent. At the last meeting of the Bulls R.S.A. Committee the sum of £lu had been voted to the local branch. The matter of "wet" canteens for New Zealand miltiary camps was discussed, members being warmly in agreement that these should be set up as soon as possible, and a resolution to this effect was carried. It was felt that much of the opposition to "wet” canteens was put forward by people who were ignorant of the conditions under which these were run, and all the experience or returned men tended to show that under proper conditions there was nothing to worry about. R. C. Hill Challenge Cup A party from Rongotea Journeyed to Ashhurst on Friday evening to endeavour to win back the Hill Cup, but though they put up a good showing the best they could manage was a draw, 54 games all, which left Ashhurst in possession. Though unsuccessful, the visitors thoroughly enjoyed their evening, being regaled with th cordial hospitality which they are led t» expect at these Ashhurst functions. Methodist Church The quarterly meeting of the officials of the Sanson-Kongo tea Methodist Circuit was held on Wednesday evening, there being 20 members present, presided over by the Rev. C. Al. Roberts. The chairman expressed satisfaction at the flourishing position of the circuit, which must be very gratifying to all. A new car bad been acquired and’ paid for. The sum of 19s 8d had been contributed to the foreign mission fund and the finance of the circuit generally was sound. Reference was made to the efforts of the senior member of the church, Airs. Sanson, who had knitted articles and donated the proceeds, amounting to £6 10s, to the car fund, the meeting authorising a, letter of thanks and appreciation to be forwarded to her. Sister Rita Snowden, of the home mission service, is to hold services and conduct meetings at the churches during the present month. The Sunday schools are preparing for their anniversary services, which will be held shortly. A unanimous invitation to remain on the circuit for a further 12 months was extended to the Rev. Roberts. In accepting. Air. Roberts expressed himself as being delighted with the co-operation he received from members, and many of his burdens had been lightened by the willing help of his parishioners. Air. H. Black and Airs. Boi water were elected delegates to the Synod, which is to be held at St. Paul’s Church, Palmerston North. The secretary was instructed to write to Air. L. Noil, conveying the thanks of the meeting foi his valued help in the past and hopes lor his speedy restoration to complete heal ini. It was decided t.o hold the annual circuit garden party at the home of Mr. W. I. Hunt early in December. A committee was appointed to enquire into the ques tion of holding religious services at the Ohakea Aerodrome. The following resolution was carried: "That this meeting records its unswerving opposition to the proposal to introduce ’wet’ canteens into military camps in the interests of men in training, and also in the interest of national efficiency.” Supper and a social half-hour concluded the evening.
