The chairman re • marked that the prohts mounted to rough ly £6l. The question to be discussed wa. j that of tne disposal of this surplus. One 1 idea which nad been suggested to him was that of holding a social garnering fo/ J memoers and their families. A number oi I the members of the committee had done I a tremendous amount of work and i?ac I not seen much of the fun, and ne though, i that a social gathering was a good idea I Mr. A. Richards spoke in support. .Mr I K. Mitchell stressed the necessity of con | lining the function to members of the ommittee and their families. Mr. W. | Moynihan said that, while at first he ha<l | not been in favour of tha proposal put I forward by th-: chairman, he had now j changed his opinion and thought that the efforts of those who had wortced so hard should be rewarded. Mr. K. Mitchel. then moved that the final meeting of the committee should take the form of a social gathering, and after further discussion this was carried unanimously. Mr A. Sinclair made reference to the approach of Arbor .Day and said that he thought that & tree should be planted in the school grounds, if possible by one o. the oldest ex-pupils, and that the tr:e should be known as the Jubilee tr?e. Mr A. E. Hyde said that he quite agreed witn ihs idea of planting trees. He mentioneu that the borough council intended to establish a Centennial memorial in tht form of ten plots of trues, in each of which would be placed a slab upon wnlcb wou.d be mscr.bed the names of five pi<* neers of the district —50 names in ail. Th.estimated cost of this proposal was £Rand of that the council had to find twothirds, tho Government providing the remainder. The raising of this money was going to be a difficult matter, sate .Mr. Hyde, who appealed to tho commit tee to make a smalt contribution to assts. the council. Stating that ho had entirely different views, Mr. W. Moynihan saiu . that he thought that a jubilee such as tht town had just celebrated should be mark ed In a fitting manner. The bulk of tho:\ who had made donations were ex-pupils, some of whom were unable to attend. The speaker said that he favoured some form of memorial, which would serve for ah time, and, in his opinion, memorial gates would suit the purpose admirably. Mr Moynihan then moved in this direction Several speakers supported this proposal Mr. K. Mitchell remarking that the gate, would serve as a reminder to those a present attending the school, 60 years hence. Mr. A. E. Hyde said that before making a move in the direction of obtain ing the gates he would suggest an exam.nation of other similar edifices in the district, mentioning in partlcifiai those at the Hokowhitu bowling gTeen a. Palmerston North, which he said were unique and everlasting. He thougnt, also, that before voting on the matter a sum should be allocated for the purpose. After further discussion Mr. Moynihan s motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Moynihan then moved that the gates be placed in the position occupied by the present main entrance, and this was also carried. Acting on a suggestion by the chairman, that

a small committee should be set up to deal with the memorial gates, the follow ing were appointed: Messrs. W. Moyn. han, R. J. Law, K. Mitchell, G. G. Mu chell, Mrs. F. JameLson, Miss J. Roac. and Miss Crovvther. This committee wi. also dispose of any surplus funds afte. the gates have been provided. In the meantime a Post Office account will L>. opened in th names of Messrs. R. J. Law and G. G. Mitchell, and the iunds placed therein. It was resolved to hold a socia. evening on Friday week, August 4, this being open only to members of the jubilee committee and their families. The foregoing gates committee will deal also witn the arrangements for the social, assisteu by Mesdames Tederson, Hook, Jameison, C. Guerin, W. Easton and Mr. R. Downes. Mr. BovLs read a letter from Mr. V\. Dickenson, the headmaster, in which tin latter requested consideration of *.s suggestion tor a donation towards the schoo. library. It was resolved to procure anlotner 60 jubilee booklets, at a cost of £- los, as many enquiries had come to hand for lurther copies of these. In refercT.ci to the records of the jubilee, it was resolved to place these In the vault in th.. borough council office for safe keeping. {The committee desires to express appre elation to the caterers who provided the banquet for the way this was carried oiu {under far from ideal conditions.
