The decision of the Duke of Connaught to sell his villa, Les Bruyeres, at St. Jean, Cap Ferrat, will leave the Cape without a royal residence, since King Leopold 111 has disposed of the great house built there by Leopold 11. The Duke bought Les Bruyeres in 1917 for about £6OOO, though he spent a good deal in enlarging and modernising it. Commanding a fine view of Monte Carlo, Bordlghera, and the sea, the hour has ten bedrooms, five reception rooms, five bathrooms, servants > quarters, and a gardener’s lodge. There are three acres of garden and the kitchen garden has been considered by many the best on the Riviera. Two best-known residents of Cap Ferrat now are M. Flandin, the French statesman, and the English writer, Somerset Maugham.
