Mental Reaction of Car Drivers

JUDGE SUGGESTS PERIODIC TESTS DESIRABLE

Tests for the mental reaction of ordinary motor-drivers were referred to briefly in the Palmerston North Supreme Court yesterday when the Hon. Mr. Justice Blair remarked that a future development, at some time or other, would be the employment of these tests. Certain submissions were being male by Air. Al. H. Oram as to the time taken between the recognition of a certain set of circumstances and the point when requisite action was taken.

His Honour: One of these days every driver ought to have to undergo a reaction test—at least every live years.

. Mr. Oram: Your Honour has seen what they are doing in America? His Honour: Yes. It is quite important, and one of these days it will come here. There does come a time, as a man grows older, when his reactions slow down, and they may be so bad that a man should not get a licence. He may be a very reputable citizen, but should not have a licence. There are a lot of very honest but slow drivers —some that are too slow.
