Mr. M. M. Prentis, president of the First National Bank, Baltimore, and Mrs. Prentis arrived at Auckland by j the Niagara from Vancouver. Two days ’ leave of absence on j account of illness was granted to Hon.! John Cobbc, member for Manawatu. in the House yesterday. Dr. E. F. Fischer, Vice-Consul for Denmark in Sydney, was a through pas-' sengcr for Honolulu by the Mariposa. He intends to make u holiday visit to Japan and China. Captain R. Guthrie, quartermaster of a battalion engaged iu training recruits for the 11th. Sikh Regiment, Indian Army, arrived by the Majriposa from Sydney to spend three mouths on holiday in the Dominion. Dr. J. F. Staton, an examiner of tire Royal Academy Schools of Music, London, arrived at Auckland by tho Niagara, accompanied by Mrs. Staton. He will conduct examinations iu New Zealand and will leave in December. Dr. R. Pitlar, of Newcastle, a former pupil of King’s College, Auckland, passed through by the Mariposa on his way to the United States to visit eye clinics with the object of establishing similar clinics in Australia on hits return. Mr. R. S. Batt’ersby, who lias been a shipping contractor in India sinco leaving the Indian Army in 1926, arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa from Sydney, with tho hope of settling in New Zealand. He was accompanied by Mrs. Battersby. Mr. R. F. Malfroy, manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Auckland, will leave by the Awatea on Monday to take up his appointment as inspector of the Queensland division of tho bank, with headquarters at Brisbane. He will begin duties in Brisbane about August 9. Mr. Malfroy’s successor, Mr. iv. J. Provan, who has been assistant-inspec-tor for Queensland, has already arrived in the Dominion. Colonel A. B. Williams, D. 5.0., of tho Royal New Zealand Artillery, who has been on loan to tho Australian Military Forces doing duty in Sydney, went to Darwin on tue Moutoro in ciiargc of 99 Royal Australian Air Force and military personnel. Ho will later proceed by air to Singapore, where he will bo stationed for a brief period. He will return to Australia by air, thence crossing to rejoin his unit in New Zealand. Mr. 1. D. Blair, who has been secretary of tho Old Pupils’ Association of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, for tho last three years, anu who is leaving shortly to study abroad under tho terms of a Macmillan Brown Research Scholarship in Agriculture, was entertained by the association recently. Appreciation of his work was expressed by the president; Mr. L. B. Scott, and tho past president, Mr. G. \V. R. Osborne, and a presentation of a camera was made to him. Mr. P. A. Smitheils has been appointed to the position cl superintendent of physical education to the Education Department in New Zealand. Mr. Smitheils has had training iu England, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany and Canada in physical education work, and he is at the present time in England. It is anticipated that ho will take over his new position towaras the end of the present year. Mr. Smithell’s duties will bo tho organisation and control of a comprehensive scheme of physical education in its widest sense throughout New Zealand's educational system.
