COWAN CUP MATCHES PAHIATUA OUTCLASSES MARIMA KONINI’S LAST-MINUTE VICTORY Saturday saw the start of the Cowan Cup matches at Rugby Park, Pahiatua. Owing to tho inclement weather, tho attendance was poor. The first match was between Pahiatua and Marima. Both teams started with only 12 men apiece, but as the game progressed more players arrived. Pahiatua were superior in all departments of the game, and the final result was 21 points to 3. In the second game the first half was very uninteresting, but when Hamua scored tho game became fast. George made many an opening for Konini and played well. C. Mitchell played an excellent game, being fast and a good tackier. First Game The following were the teams: — Pahiatua (green and black): J. Corkill, R. Murch, D. Watts, M. Kershaw, F. Mills, R. Croad, T. Rollett, H. Goss, K. Pankhurst, J. Pahu, A. Gunn, G. Kershaw (captain), R. Leach. Marima (blue): R. Jones, R. Matthews, Eddie, Mahar, Gunderson, Wornall, P. Cox, Cavanagh, Hines, A. Ross, Biddiss (captain), J. Cavanagh, E. Fouhy, H. Wilton. Mr. C. Skilton was the referee. Pahiatua kicked off to find the line on their side of the twenty-five line. From tho line-out play was held near midfield for some time until the Pahiatua backs handled the ball and the leather was passed out to Murch, who took the ball at a fast pace to gain the line near the corner flag. The conversion kick was disallowed. Pahiatua 3, Marima 0.

Pahiatua were soon again deep in Marima’s territory and Murch was very unluck3 r not to go over, but the Marima backs tackled well and the ball was taken to midfield. The leather was taken to the far side of the field, where Croad picked up to pass to Watts, who scored. Murch took the kick, but failed to convert. Pahiatua 6, Marima 0. Marima were on the attack and tho ball was carried*at their feet. M. Kershaw held the ball whilst on the ground and a penalty was awarded Marima. Mahar took tho kick from the twenty-five, but failed to pilot the ball over the bar. Just before halftime Pahiatua were deep in Marima’s territory. A free kick was awarded Pahiatua and M. Kershaw put the ball over from twenty yards out. Pahiatua 9, Marima 0. The second half saw Marima on the attack and play was held in Pahiatua’s twenty-five until Corkill cleared and the ball was taken well downfield. Pahiatua gradually made ground and Leach dived over the line. He took his own kick, but failed. Pahiatua 12, Marima 0. It was not long before the ball was thrown out to the winger, Murch, who took the pass well and ran from about forty yards to place the leather between the posts. He took the kick too cheaply. Pahiatua 15, Marima 0. From tho kick off Marima galloped away. Eddie picked up and made a good run, but was grounded. The leather went right across the field and Pahiatua with speed took play deep. M. Kershaw gained possession and crossed the line. Corkill failed to convert. Pahiatua 18, Marima 0. Again Pahiatua took the ball well upfield and a free kick was awarded, G. Kershaw piloting an easy shot over to bring the total to:

Pahiatua 21, Marima 0. Marima started a fresh attack and were over Pahiatua’s twenty-five when a free kick was awarded them. P. Cavanagh put the leather over to bring tho score to: Pahiatua 21, Marima 3. Time was called soon afterwards. Second Game The teams were:— Konini (blue and red): D. Keene, G. Smith, H. George, E. Hirst, L. Barraclough, M. Harris, B. Berney, A. Mahoney, A. Verry, C. Brown, T. Verry (captain), A. Watt, M. Connell, B. Smith, E. Brown. Hamua (black and white): R. Burke, J. Cavanagh, D. Davies, S. Wolland, D. Wolland, Marsh, W. Bradick, R. Bradick, B. Hansen, H. Cooper, L. Bailey (captain), C. Mitchell, A. Broome, G. Mitchell. Mr. E. Matson was the referee. George kicked off for Konini and a scrum was ordered near the twentyfive line. The whistle went and Konini were given a free kick, which H. George failed to turn into points. Play was held near half-way for some time and a number of scrums took place, until Barraclough picked up to pass out to George, who made good ground to kick the ball over the head of Wolland. Hirst raced up, but Wolland secured and kicked for touch. From the line--1 out Hamua gained possession and the ball was taken back to half-way. A number of scrums followed, Konini winning most of them. George got away aud was carrying the* ball at his 1 feet, but Mitchell came across fast and saved. Hamua took play into Konini’s t' territory. A free kick was awarded J Hamua, but Cooper’s effort failed. Up l to this stage the game was very un- • interesting to watch, play being mostly near half-way. Konini gained posses--7 sion and after a series of passes the t game was taken deep. A fight was 1 carried on on the far side of the field

until Berney crossed the line. George failed to add the extra points. Konini 3, Hamua 0.

Up-and-down play followed until the half-time whistle went without any further score being made. | After the spell Konini were out to score and the paco was on. Konini were knocking at Hamua’s goal-line, but Wolland cleared. George picked up and carried tho leather back again, but tho Hamua backs cleared. Mitchell gained tho leather and with a fast run took the ball down to Konini’s twentyfive line, but Keene raced across and Mitchell dropped the ball, which was taken by Keene, who booted the leather to midfield. Hamua started a fresh attack and play was taken to within five yards of the line, but the ball went into touch. From the line-out Konini cleared, and after play near the half-way line, George took the ball up to near Hamua’s twenty-five. Just before lie was about to be tackled he kicked over the head of Mitchell, but the ball went too far aud was forced down by Hamua. Again Konini were well upfield. Bailey secured to pass to Bradick, who took the ball at his toe to over tho half-way line Mahoney fell on the leather, but the ball was taken away and the Hamua forwards took it well downfield. Burke picked up and crossed the line. Cooper put a beautiful kick over to bring the score to: Hamua 5, Konini 3. The light was failing fast, and with only a few minutes left, Konini were out to add to their points. Play was taken well upfield by Mahoney, who passed out to Verry, who dived for the lino. George failed to convert. Konini G, Hamua 5. Play was now willing. The Ivonini forwards brought the ball into Hamua’s twenty-live q>nd again the position looked dangerous, but the ball went into touch five yards from the corner flag for full time, Konini being the winners by six points to five.
