Britain Appoints Middle East Commander
VITAL DEFENCE AREA INCREASED RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER GUARANTEES (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, July 20. Lieutenant-General Sir Archibald Saveli has been appointed to the new-ly-created post of General Officer tommanding-in-Chief to command the British land forces in the Middle East. His functions will be in peace to supervise the preparation of the defence plans of those forces, and in war to coordinate their actions.
The Daily Telegraph says that the reecnt commitments to Turkey and Greece increase the responsibilities that Britain already has in the Middle East, and in those circumstances it was an elementary precaution to create a new office specially charged with the defence of an area vital to Empire communications.
