PERSONAL ITEMS

Mr. A. Kennedy was a visitor at the meeting of tho Talmerston North Citizens' Lunch Club yesterday. Mr. A. R. Galbraith, Christchurch city engineer, has been granted three months' sick leave and will sail from Auckland by the Awatea on July 31 oi a visit to Australia and Boutli Africa.

An arrival by the Awatea from Sydney was Mr. K. J. Provan, until re cently assistant-inspector in Queensland for the’Bank of New South Wales. Mr. Pro van has been appointed manager in Auckland for the bank, succeeding Mr. R. F. Malfroy, who has been appointed inspector in Queensland. At the meeting of the Palmerston North Citizens' Lunch Club yesterday congratulations were extended Air. P. S. Larcomb, of Palmerston North, on the high honour accorded him in being appointed to the position Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies of tho Grand Lodge of Eugland.

Another link with tho earl}' history of South Taranaki was severed with the death ou Wednesday of Air. Arthur (“Attic") Newell, Fraser Road, near Hawera. Air. Newell was one mouth short of his 82nd birthday, aud GG years of his life had been spent in the Hawera district. He had seen Hawera grow from its infancy to its present modern standard, and he had also played no Ismail part in the development of the fertile plains of South Taranaki. In every respect Air. Newell was a pioneer, and there are many who will mourn his passing. Mrs. Newell died iu 1923 but

he is survived by three sous and three daughters.
